@jj – I get the feeling you’re not constrained by having to go with an LCC schedule from a regional airport!
@Wiseoldman – let us know what you decide! Santorini is definitely on our list – archaeology and diving!
@northenlass will update when finalised!
@NorthernLass Jet2’s flights to Greece from MAN look pretty good.
Here’s why Santorini isn’t for me. Population density per km2 according to Wikipedia: Santorini, 203; Crete, 76; Naxos 48.
But Santorini has a dramatic caldera and Minoan ruins. The Thira eruption of 1600-ish BCE was one of the most powerful in human history and may form the basis of the Atlantis and Exodus stories. Probably best avoided in July and August though!
Santorini is one of those bucket list things even though it may be the place for regular visitors. Price/value ratio seems terrible though and dont know if the place would live up to the hype if we do end up going there.
Actually even 203 people per km2 isn’t too bad – Malta has 1380!
Santorini is still great in June. If you decide to go there, you will not regret it. Happy to provide recommendations for places to visit. I am not as good with recommendations on places to stay though
Just returned from Santorini yesterday with 2 kids under 5 and the weather was a comfortable 18-25 celsius.
It is generally very hilly and steps everywhere but that comes a panoramic sea view at most of the tourist locations.
Crowds were on the lighter side With end of May still being shoulder / off peak season, but I definitely would not want to be here when it is peak season to queue for the obligatory (for the Mrs) photo shots and restaurants etc.
As the nice car hire lady told me, ‘nothing is cheap in Santorini’ and proceeded not to charge me for damages to an abused Fiat Panda that wasn’t my doing.
But if one is used to London prices, its business as usual. We’ve even stumbled across a 3 michelin star restaurant in Oia that makes a London 1 star looks expensive. Mrs was very tempted but settled for a sensible seabass and pork gyros due to my unsuitable wardrobe and offsprings.
Spent many holidays travelling the Greek Islands – spent our honeymoon in Crete and walking the Samaria Gorge, which was one of our highlights. Don’t think that is what you are looking for!
Personally prefer the smaller islands without airports as someone else mentioned. Over the years we’ve been to and enjoyed islands such as Sifnos, Serifos, Amorgos, Naxos, Schinoussa and many others. Maybe not luxury and again perhaps not what you’re looking for, but certainly less tourists. We arrived in Santorini. Had a drink and dinner. It was so noisy and so packed with tourists cancelled our remaining nights and took the ferry the next day to a quieter island!

We stayed at the Anantara and loved it. The cafe is a destination for afternoon tea, but you have breakfast there without the muggles so don’t bother with that.
@masaccio thanks. Currently around Euro200/night. is it good at that price?
@freckles appreciate it. I did find these on search of HFP.

Seems so given I paid £410 for two nights last November to BA Avios Hotels.
