Before I bury my head in who know what guide book, any suggestions for a Greek island that fits the brief of scuba diving, good food, bit of history? Bonus points for child and nightlife unfriendliness.
Just throwing this out there, but why focus on an island? We flew out to Kalamata last year then headed West before renting a villa almost at the coast. Food was good, a bit of history, I believe there was scuba diving, and because of the simple fact you don’t run out of land like you do on an island, you can probably get better value, too.
I was pleasantly surprised as to how well everything worked (years since I’ve been in Greece) and it was properly relaxing. Normally takes me a few days to zone out, although I think the constant supply of G&Ts on the way out probably helped a little bit….
Agree that you don’t need to go to an island. I’d suggest flying into Athens and getting down to the Eastern Peloponnesus via Corinth. Plenty of buses, take the train or drive. Try Nafplion to Monemvasia on the Argolid Gulf.
We have recently discovered the towns of the northern Corinth Gulf coast, but this may too quiet for you but it is very Greek.
Otherwise you could try Crete, particularly West side or South coast. Fly via Chania (CHQ). A lot quieter and away from Malia etc.
It all depends on how long you have, and the budget you have, and whether it’s you single, as a couple – your last comment made that ambiguous
3-4 days one island only
4-7 days 2 islands
7-10 days 3 islands
They all have their own charm
All the islands have their own history, and all Greek islands have some type of scuba diving, and also you can often do island day trips from one base if that is what you want

Probably a couple of weeks as a couple and budget for us is typically good value luxury though that might be harder in August.
Off the beaten track is certainly nothing that bothers us and what we would opt for in Italy a lot. We are often driven by where the best food is.
I can only speak from experience, but although expensive (especially August), I would recommend 3-4 days in Athens (amazing history), followed by 4-5 nights in Santorini – very unlikely to see many families, very romantic, got some very interesting history, and non-existent nightlife in the right location. Enjoy whatever you plan.
Naxos. Went last year. Loved it. Will tick all your boxes.

Going there later this year for the first time in 30 years, so glad to hear that.
Yikes, please please stop telling folk about Naxos…..shhhhh
No, no, so go to Naxos it’s fab. And it’ll keep people away from . . . . .
