Forums Payment cards American Express Has Amex done away with Shop Small?

  • 979 posts

Morning, as per the topic title – I haven’t seen anything about Shop Small at all (I may have missed it, or it may be too early…?) but I have seen Amex’s ‘Nominate a small business and win something or other’ advertisements.

That nominate a small business is the new shop small promotion. Got an email a few weeks ago. Read it and deleted. It’s not worth my while doing Amex’s work for them.

I might be more likely to nominate a business that doesn’t but should take Amex but I would then expect Amex to actually follow through and persuade said business to do so and then pay me handsomely for the business development introduction.

Being discussed on the daily thread. Seems to be dead: https://becleverwithyourcash.com/make-amex-shop-small/

No great loss – I’d stopped bothering a year or two back when it became more and more restricted.

@AJA Pret in St Albans doesn’t take Amex. But every branch I ever visit in London does. There’s my nomination. Can’t fathom how Amex wouldn’t insist on a chain-wide acceptance.

I’ve stopped bothering with this stuff. I’m all for supporting small local business but when Amex is my main card, it’s hard to do that when there’s signs on the door that they accept Amex, as well as the Shop Small sticker, and then they end up not accepting Amex. I’ve found some restaurants in London Chinatown will also have signs stating this but will hand you a POS reader that won’t accept Amex, and it’s a gamble on which one accepts it.

I always go to the same corner shop nearby since they accept Amex and don’t look dodgy.
