Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Forums Payment cards American Express Have you ever seen a bonus when converting MR to avios?

I’m still a newbie to the UK point system.

Wondering if you guys have seen any promotions for converting MR to avios? Now the currency is 1 to 1. Would it be possible that it’s 1 to 1.25 at some point in the future?

Another possible promotion is earning more per £ spent. So now it’s 1£ to 1MR point. Have they ever increased this rate (set side the sign off bonus)?

I come from HK and these two promotions are quite common. I’m thinking should I convert my MR now or can wait until there’s high rates.

I don’t think so with what I managed to dig up at the early days of my hunt for information regarding Amex cards. Seems like USA do 40% bonuses. If you want 25% bonus to match 1.25 rate, you’ll have to go with HSBC and their reward points system because they do that once a year around this time. In fact, it started about a month ago.

Just make sure you convert in quantities that allow you to boost the Avios at X3.
I converted almost 140k the other day and realised too late that this exceeds the 300k annual limit (at X3 rate) and will now need to use the inferior rate that goes with the X2 boost.

    Not happening.

Amex hates airline conversions. You have noticed that they are desperate to get you to redeem for statement credit (0.45p per point) or gift cards (0.5p per point).

Amex is known in the industry to overpay for airline miles so are very likely to be on 0.8p to 1p+ if you convert to miles.

The last thing in the world they want to do is encourage you via a bonus to move to an airline.

It does except makes no sense why they don’t boost the redemption value for money off more?

If they’re paying a third party 0.8-1p why not just offer a boost to 0.8-0.9p to redeem for money off your spend. Only time I saw it was during Covid.
