What would be the best way to get to Heathrow on the day of the funeral? It seems Monday, which would be a Bank Holiday is the likely day.
Based on previous events can I expect any restrictions on Heathrow Express or now, the Elizabeth Line?
I would need to get to LHR immediately after it ends. Postponing to another day is not an option.
The last “previous event” was 70 years ago.
The best way depends on where you’re coming from and how long you have.
I expect transport will be more crowded than usual. I would expect the normal Monday timetable to run on the HEx and EL. I would expect the Piccadilly line to run a Saturday or Sunday timetable (which has a better service than weekday rush hours at certain times) perhaps adapted to expected loadings.
Haha very good! I meant the Jubilee or other recent events.
With the population of London 70 years ago, much lower threat of terrorism and limited air travel I thought it would be obvious what I was referring to.
I would expect restrictions in quite a few places the day before as well given who is likely to be flying in. This is a state occasion and I would expect other heads of state to attend. Not sure word will be sent out it’s all online for this one.
Stansted or an RAF runway are normally chosen, not LHR.
Other airports may be used if they have their own planes, but any using a scheduled service likely to be coming into LHR? Simon Calder has said ‘industry insiders’ are suggesting major disruption likely. I’m due to travel through LHR on Sunday and sort of expecting yet another cancellation notice from BA.

On the day before the funeral, expect a lot of people coming in still, but departing should be fine. Departing on Tuesday 20th or Wednesday 21st might well have more issues than usual….
Current train message for Sunday 18th reads “Avanti West Coast have restricted ticket sales for this day”.
