Forums Frequent flyer programs Other frequent flyer schemes Help regarding Asia miles and Avios

    Hi guys

Could I please get some help.

I am looking to book a one way business class flight from Hong Kong – Manchester on Cathy

The date I have found shows 84,000 Asia miles + £120 in cash. However on BA it is showing 92750 Avios + £110 in cash. On Qatar I can’t even find it on the date for some reason.

What I would like help with is how come there is a slight difference regarding miles as both airlines have the same cash price but a difference in air miles.

Lastly what advice would you recommend and which platform would you suggest I use to make the booking.

Going forward how can I also improve my search

    Kind regards in advance

Avios are a more useful currency if you’re UK based so I would guess they are worth a bit more to you – if you already have a modest Avios balance, keep stacking it and instead transfer the Amex MR to Cathay Asia Miles for this redemption. That would be my advice. You are unlikely to need Cathay Miles, but you may find yourself wishing you had some spare Avios in the near future 🙂

Don’t you need to manually request CX redemptions with QR?

Asia Miles are a completely different currency to Avios, they do not need to be the same price. Also check the change and cancellation possibilities and prices before deciding which program to use

Each airline has their own redemption chart and fees.

Thanks for getting back guys. I have now understood that my way of thinking wasn’t entirely how things work. ill follow what the person above says and just hold off on transferring until I know what and where I will be flying. Has anyone by any chance used Cathy business? Any feedback you care to share.

    Thanks in advance

Yes, there are reviews on this site floating about. You can expect a good standard of food and drink and a more polished service than BA, with meals available to pre-order (and seat selection is free). Personally I find it equal in comfort, style and food and drink to Qatar Airways / Singapore Airlines but people shout about it less as there are a few less bells and whistles (eg slightly worse amenity kit / cabin atmosphere).

oh great thank you for getting back so fast. If I wanted to have a special meal, ie a muslim meal in business, do you know how that would be. do you think I would just get prepacked food like the muslim meal I received in economy. its something I am quiet uncertain about and because of that I am leaning towards business on Qatar as that way I can enjoy the food more freely.

Hopefully it docent sound so silly but Its taken me some time to get these points and want to get the best out of it and I do love my food.

the aim is to one day use business on Qatar to Sydney so I can can enjoy a nice halal steak. Well at least I hope so, since I don’t know if they even have something like that on the menu

    Thanks again

Although I wouldn’t get my hopes up hugely for the food, if I were Muslim, I’d 100% go with Qatar as of course all their food is halal – and with Cathay, you just tick a box that says “Muslim special meal” –with no choices, which can make for a really disappointing experience!

Out of interest, how are you proposing to fly back to Manchester? It might help to fill us in on that as people may see ways that you have overlooked.

I used to fly this route regularly. In terms of the seats itself, I’d prefer the CX flight.

The CX flight between MAN-HKG uses A359 which has the Safran Cirrus III seat which still feels relatively new.
Meanwhile, QR regularly uses ex-CX aircraft on the DOH-HKG leg, which still has the older CX product with Safran Cirrus II seat. Although the two seats look almost the same, it just feels a lot less ‘polished’ when sitting in the QR seat on this route.
The MAN-DOH leg has three flights a day – of which only one has Q-Suites I believe. The other two flights uses B789 which again personally feels more cramped than the CX seats.

For special meals on CX – I can’t say for sure what the muslim meal is like. However, my partner ordered the Low Lactose meal and it was not ‘pre-packaged’ per se – all three courses were served on proper plates/cutlery. The crew were also nice and were apologetic to her when they were dishing out chocolate after the meal to the rest of the cabin and didn’t offer her one because they contained milk.

oh okay that is interesting. Thanks ‘executive club’ and ‘kevinchoi’, your feedback has been very informative. Based on that I think I will follow your suggestions and stick with Qatar and forget about using a reward flight on Cathy. its interesting how everyone views different things as their priority. i think all flights in business will be more than conformable, but I don’t think all flights will have the specific food I can eat, and based on that maybe Qatar is the way to go. I really do appreciate everyones help.

sure no problem ‘Blair waldorf salad’. I was thinking of taking a single journey from Manchester to Sydney via Hong Kong on Cathy.

I am happy to fly in economy and would like to also stay a few days In Hong Kong as I need to sort some documentation related stuff. since Cathy offer a free stopover I thought this route would work based on the documeation stuff I need to sort out plus it also breaks up the journey a little bit too.

I would then continue my journey with Cathy to Sydney. coming home the idea was to take a business class flight on Qatar all the way from Sydney to Manchester.

Again big thanks for everyone and their help.
