I returned a car to Hertz today. There’s a teeny-weeny nick in one of the alloys. And I really mean teeny. They want to charge £110 + £24 loss of use + £45 admin fee.
Am I being unreasonable to think that the loss of use fee is a con? What loss of use?
Amex Plat will be paying, so I’m not too bothered, but it’s the principle dammit!
If the wheel is being repaired the car can’t be rented to a customer, loss of use.
Refer it to your insurance and let them deal with it.
@Dougzz99 is right, though I would be very surprised if they fixed it imminently.
They’ll most likely wait till they no longer have use for the car then get everything repaired at once (having charged multiple people after you the “loss of use” fee too 🙄) – then sell it / return it
Sure, but they’re not going to repair it. They never do for small things like this. They just rack up a few hundred quid for each ding, and then laugh uproariously when they get rid of the car and find they’ve banked £3k in damage charges.
Yeah, it’s a con. Quite likely it was already there when you picked up the car.
Yup, I’ve heard the same ding is charged multiple customers multiple times in the life of a car, not fixed, then they fix what they have to (and only what they have to) when the car goes back to the manufacturer or for auction.
It’s a profit centre – probably the main one car rental co’s have?
The thing is, though, given you do have insurance, how much time in your life do you have to deal with it? I’d let Amex know, it’s good for records to be kept, insurance companies are no fools about what goes on in the car rental industry but leave them to deal with it.
And thank your lucky stars you did, in this case via Amex, have insurance.
