I’m staying at the Gatwick Hilton tomorrow as gold for first time. It’s clear from a dummy booking that there are plenty of rooms free so should I wait to check in at the hotel rather than check in online to see if I get the upgrade? Same goes for claiming free breakfast? Any help is appreciated.
Make sure you’ve selected the breakfast option as a myway benefit in your account for that brand. There’s no “claiming” it’s a default depending on the option you’ve chosen before check in.
Did you check in the app if you’ve got an upgrade? It often shows few days before.
It is just me, but I never checkin online if I haven’t got an upgrade.
And yes, free breakfast must be selected prior.
We stayed at the Gatwick Hilton last Saturday. As Gold I booked a base Double but was offered a King Deluxe complimentary when checking in on the app. Selected the points as My Way benefit as points as we had an early start and have received them. I did ask about this at reception and they said confusingly that they don’t apply My Way benefits at this particular hotel and that I would have got breakfast if I wanted it anyway as Gold – so thoroughly confused – probably best to clarify at reception.
We’ll be there again tomorrow as we have a late flight back and I don’t fancy a long drive. Subject of course to the impending storm!
Stayed last night and also upgraded to King Deluxe room on 4th floor. Really liked the digital key. Selected breakfast as the benefit but oddly the restaurant did not have us down as gold. Quickly resolved though. Thought the breakfast was above average for this type of hotel. My wife was impressed that they had vege sausages out and hot buffet items were all hot-ish for a change. One query, access to the executive lounge. It looked like it was a benefit from the room upgrade but room key wouldn’t let us in?
Doubt it was an upgrade benefit unless the king room is on executive floor. Even then many hotels deny lounge access unless you paid for it. Best to ask at reception.
Stayed last night again too. Got the same upgrade to a King Deluxe from a base Double. Agree with you about the breakfast as they were also doing cooked to order omelettes.
Not sure that lounge access is part of the upgrade.

In my experience this happens way more often than it should.
Palmer House in Chicago is a nightmare for this and their answer is to go queue at reception behind all the people checking out to get it fixed before you’re allowed in for breakfast.
