Can anyone help me try and determine the best value for a hotel stay im booking? Im trying but it seems illogical
Background is im looking to book a hotel in October for a family trip (Sorrento Palace). Im Hilton Gold via my Amex Plat, and have about 100k Amex points and 5k Hilton points
The advance rate for the hotel is £1300, semi-flex £1500 (five nights)
It looks like its 528,000 points for the stay (so lets 520,000).
I can buy 160,000 for £665 with the 100% bonus which leaves 360,000 points to cover. So compared to the semi-flex rate I need to buy these for £835. There is no chance I can do that right?
If you want to use your amex points they are worth 200k HH so with your current 5k you are ~320k short. You should be able to buy them for $1600 which is £1320 on a NOFX card.
IMO it seems to be better value to pay cash and you’ll also get a chunk of HH back.
Technically if you buy 1300 worth of points with an american express gold preferred card, you should get 2600 MR which equates to 2600 HH points as a bonus.
thanks – tbh i think there is no way to beat the advance rate or even semi-flex rate with points value even with the bonuses. just wanted to check i wasnt missing anything.
Hi Peld, you must be looking at half term?
I see 60K per night outside of half term so that’s only 240K points with your 5th night free, no value half term as the Standard redemption rooms are either taken or withdrawn.
We’re staying there in a few weeks time.
Use 0.04p per point and 540k is a terrible deal vs cash
80k+80k (100% bonus) = $800 ie £665
320k would cost you £1,330 therefore 520k = £2,161
I too value HH points at £0.004p and agree that cash would be a better option here.
it makes no sense to me to pay 130k HH points per night for that hotel.

yes it is October half term. We we’re looking at the quadruple superior room (for the 4 of us) which was a much higher rate vs a normal room

That’s a premium points redemption, which Rob says works out at only about 0.2p per point value. You’ll almost never get good value from these*.
*I did once where an exec room with lounge access was the same points as a standard room. I didn’t get the 5 for 4, but it still worked out better.
