Forums Payment cards American Express Hilton spend £300 and £75 cash back – should I choose GBP?

    Good evening.

Looking to book Hilton in Germany for August and trigger Amex ( issued in Uk ) £75 cash back. It lets you select currency. Should I select GBP or EUR please? It is for a Pre paid reservation. Might be a silly question!Thank you so much in advance.

Apologies, please ignore this. I can see on checkout it defaults back to euros. Thank you.

Theoretically the pre-paid rate isn’t valid for this offer as it is supposed to be checkout spend only, but as many will confirm, it usually does tip the offer if processed at the hotel locally as the majority are.

I paid for a Hilton in Saudi Arabia earlier this week in KSA currency and it still activated the offer so I don’t think the currency matters as Amex will bill you in GBP. The foreign transaction fee won’t count to the total though as others have previously confirmed.

The transaction will bill in the local currency whatever currency you select to view on the Hilton website. Amex will charge you 2.99% currency conversion from Euro and that fee doesn’t count towards to the £300.

Also dont count on a prepaid reservation actually processing immediately. I’ve had 7 of the last 9 Marriott transactions not process until just before the stay or when I arrived.

It will never process immediately as someone at the hotel needs to notice they have received a new booking and decide to charge it.

At some hotels the breakfast restaurant is adjacent to the front desk and you can actually see them doing this.

Thank you for your replies. So do you think I could contact the hotel to say charge the card? Would they do that? Thanks again.

Give it about a week then contact them
