I’m sure this may be a known issue as I’ve read that BA jacked up the Avios requirements for a one way HKG to LHR with recent changes as they’re not allowed to charge more than £38 taxes. So instead of 75k Avios a business class one way is 100k, yet the £38 tax remains.
If I price up a return from London it’s 200k Avios off peak plus £550. If I do two one ways, it’s 100k each way, £275 tax from London and £38 from Hong Kong. So the return incurs £237 more tax?!
How do I get around this with a Barclays voucher as I can’t use it to upgrade one class if the leg doesn’t start in the uk? Or when I next qualify for the Amex voucher is there a way around this by calling BA? It is odd that they’re blatantly overcharging in this way.
Yes, that’s correct. The tax is £38 at the base (highest) Avios level, which still results in a one way from HK being cheaper, although less so than it used to be.
With a 2for1 voucher you can book the return separately as a one-way and then call to claim the 50% Avios refund. Someone posted yesterday to confirm that they had done that the cash charge had not been adjusted.
No idea if you can do that with an upgrade voucher, though logically I’d have thought the same option would apply.
Note that you will still end up with two separate bookings in that case.
