    Beat this:

    Council tax: £3,546.84
    Water: £505.80
    Sewerage : £586.98
    Total: £4,639.62

Edinburgh council don’t (easily) take Amex but it gets me a good chunk of my required spending for the Virgin Atlantic card.

Impressive. You can halve that by moving to South Kensington!

Same here, in fact I’ve just been wondering when the bill is going to land!

Oh dear Froggee, I hope when you retire next year, you won’t be relying on the state pension (or maybe you are too young for this) as it will only just about cover your utilities.

My theory is that they will keep increasing the age limit so we all die before we can actually claim.

Oh I retired over two years ago. Don’t ask!

I’m still in my 40s so my expectation is the pension will be means tested by the time it’s my turn. But that’s okay as those with the broadest shoulders blah, blah, blah.

Has anyone succeeded in using Amex for Edinburgh clowncil tax? Is there a route using PayPoint?

Yes. You need to contact CEC and request a payment card, find a friendly Scotmid and use Paypoint, in £150 chunks (they can lump multiple payment card transaction into one cc payment)

Great advice thanks. My council allows paypoint and the barcode on the bill can just be scanned at local Coops and AMEX accepted there. Made 4 separate £200 payments in the last week towards next years bill. Helping me hit the £15k BA Amex spend target for 100 tier points!

Being in the country in a big house, the best “investment” we ever made was the septic tank! So no sewerage “council tax”.

    I’m in NI.

LPS accept only MC or VISA, but do give a 2% discount for payment in full before a deadline.

One year I tried to pay my bill at a local Co-op but I think I broke them. They could only accept £200 at a time and there was a debate whether one of the transactions went through.

My Rates bill is £3300ish…. NI calculates a percent of a hypothetical property value in 2005. My property was built in 2018!

PayPoint payments can’t be made with credit cards, only debit cards, so not sure about the Co-op claims made earlier?

Most councils and water companies don’t accept Amex or PayPal (although there are a few exceptions) but many will accept Mastercard… this is where the Avios Barclaycard comes in extremely handy and for me justifies it’s fee on the paid version for 1.5 Avios per £ and the £10k trigger for the cabin upgrade voucher 😉

On the contrary, credit cards, including Amex, are very much accepted at many co-op paypoints. You just need to find a friendly one.

Anyone else here in York and figured out a way of using Amex to pay Council Tax?

Can you suggest a friendly Scotmid on the south side (of Edinburgh)? Ta.

I’m not from York, but I can see they accept paypoint, all of the above recommendations therefore apply.

Only thing I can use is Barclays 🙁 i.e. Wokingham council.

Please note our systems are down due to essential Year End processes. We are aiming to restore all services back on Monday afternoon. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

    Its nearly Easter.

People on here have been using CCs especially Amex for Paypoint for years, you just need to find a retailer that will acccept it. For example Co-op does, Asda doesnt. My local Shell garage does with no max but he has to process multiple £200 at a time if I want to do large amounts.

Presumably they mean a fiscal rather than calendar year end.

    What about it?

This year Easter Sunday is 31st March so the end of the financial year.

There are year end processes that can be run before the end of the year as that helps with reconcilliations and accounting tc

No personal experience, sorry, as I’m on the north side, but generally have found a Scotmid that also shows on the Paypoint site as taking Collect+ is good, so you could try Warrender Pk Rd or Marchmont Rd!

In case anyone lives in Greenwich, you need to request a payment card from the Council, which can then be used at blue Co-Ops for Paypoint with Amex.

Same here (apart from the big house)! £90 a couple of times a year to get it emptied – he only takes cash though.

my coop can only do £100 at a time, but amex was fine last year (I paid ahead to meet plat SUB).

Tried a Co-op today and they said it wasn’t possible as their till can’t create a signed receipt, which he said he needed for this amount. Tried a local newsagent who said she wasn’t happy putting through multiple £150 amounts. Went to a Morrisons Daily with a PayPoint and they happily loaded multiples of £150 until they hit the total, then processed a single payment on my card. Good to know for future years.

@WoodyYork, you live in a very posh area (well it thinks it is), don’t be surprised if you appear in the local press for acting suspiciously, lol.

May I ask if anyone knows there is a way to pay with amex for hammersmith & fulham council? I called them and ask for paypal/paypoint but they said they only allow visa/master. Much appreciated in advance.
