PayPoint payments can’t be made with credit cards, only debit cards, so not sure about the Co-op claims made earlier?

Most councils and water companies don’t accept Amex or PayPal (although there are a few exceptions) but many will accept Mastercard… this is where the Avios Barclaycard comes in extremely handy and for me justifies it’s fee on the paid version for 1.5 Avios per £ and the £10k trigger for the cabin upgrade voucher 😉

Hi Rich you’re mistaken, AMEX is definitely accepted by Paypoint in Coop stores. I’ve made 4 £200 payments in different stores in Liverpool and London this week. My council doesn’t accept AMEX on its own payment line (only MC/Visa) and makes no reference anywhere about how to pay with AMEX, but it is possible. If your council allows payments by paypoint or payzone, you can pay with AMEX. I’ve not attempted multiple payments in one transaction.

Yeah, didnt think of that. Doh!

May I ask if anyone knows there is a way to pay with amex for hammersmith & fulham council? I called them and ask for paypal/paypoint but they said they only allow visa/master. Much appreciated in advance.

Same here. Did you ask Payzone? Your only option may only be Barclays if you want Avios.

People on here have been using CCs especially Amex for Paypoint for years, you just need to find a retailer that will acccept it. For example Co-op does, Asda doesnt. My local Shell garage does with no max but he has to process multiple £200 at a time if I want to do large amounts.

Yeah this has been my go to and have ran quite a bit, and by a bit I mean a lot.

Remember with Co-op there are different Co-ops!

There’s the national co-op and then there are local ones, like Scotmid.

Indeed, it has to be the blue Co-Ops (https://shop.coop.co.uk/), not green or other Co-Ops.

Most uf not all Scotmids in Edinburgh take Amex. I favour the Bonnyrigg Branch. Would advise purchasing some other goods at the samectime. The amex limit is now £200 but asking for multiple payments just causes confusion.

Apart from the ones mentioned are there any other institutions that accept Paypoint as method of payment?

I now also pay Gas/Electricity via AMEX. Octopus allow payments via credit cards including AMEX online in your Octopus account. Have reduced my direct debits to £10 and made AMEX upfront payments. Don’t think there’s a limit, I’ve made £500 payments.

Don’t you have to pay each month though? OVO don’t take Amex but I can put £1k on Virgin or Barclaycard a couple of times a year then forget about it, apart from occasionally getting a refund on any balance that’s built up … to the DD account. of course.

No requirement for monthly payments with Octopus over your minimal direct debit. Plus, a free sausage roll each week!

I mean if you want to use Amex? I thought I’d read in another thread that this was the only way to do it.

Octopus? Nope, I do similar to Ramsey – top up 500 every few months.
They couldn’t make it any more simpler. You can even use Apple Pay. A few clicks is all it takes.

Do you know if the Octopus spend counts as spend to hit promotions such as “spend 10k in next 3 months earn 10k points” etc?

I’m an Octopus-AMEX’er too, very handy when you’ve got a SUB or voucher to hit – just load it up!

I love ApplePay’s convenience so much that it really infuriates me when a website or app doesn’t accommodate it. Particularly things like parking that you just want to do in a hurry and move on with your day.

Can you suggest a friendly Scotmid on the south side (of Edinburgh)? Ta.

Co-op Food – Edinburgh – South Clerk Street, has always worked well for me. Player 2 also uses it to top up her bus pass with Amex 🙂

I also have Octopus set up with £5 DD. After top ups do you leave most of your large balances in there or do you request a refund?

    1,077 posts

You can reduce that to £1… get it all out and move it somewhere earning interest. You’ll probably need to submit meter readings before they allow you to withdraw money, even if you have a smart meter (it’s a regulatory requirement to ask for that).

You can them top up with credit card directly on Octopus website (including Amex), or get 2% cashback via Zilch+debit card: https://customers.payzilch.com/signup?inviteCode=c2KwCI (my ref link, gets you £5).

My council tax bill has just hit the doormat and they are still accepting Paypal. I’ve decided I want to trigger this year’s 241 by the end of this month, so this is good news.

Are HFP readers the only people who are actually pleased to get a council tax bill?!

I live on an entirely private estate where the roads, pavements, lighting, security, waste – basically everything is done by our estate management company. Even our railway station is inside the estate, so I literally don’t even step on a local council pavement most days. It makes paying Council Tax particularly painful! 🙂

Well we don’t get an awful lot apart from the bins being emptied, but it’s got to be paid so pointless to get stressed about it. We were put in the wrong band when our estate was built and didn’t find out for about 5 years, got £2k rebate plus down-banding so I still feel like a winner over that one 😂. Especially as we have a few eternally grateful neighbours who wouldn’t have known without my sleuthing.
