Hey all.
Firstly, thanks for all your tips and tricks so far. I have been reading the forums on the best ways to redeem my points and the tips have been very useful in securing our first business class flight tickets to Japan.
I recently used my BA American express premium plus 241 voucher to redeem a flight to Japan. By some absolute fluke I manage to get my outbound from LHR>HND during cherry blossom season however my return flight was not as lucky. After calling Japanese call centre at 1:00 several days in a row, the business class flights were booked for the dates that we wanted to return by 01:03… I guess no surprise there, however we did have a plan B to fly from Singapore to LHR, which we have now booked. My question to the forum, should I wait and re check availability for HND>LHR in the hope that more availability becomes open and we won’t have to fly out from Singapore. We don’t mind flying out from Singapore but I wanted to check if I am likely going to have more luck later to change my flight to fly out from Japan and therefore i should not book my flight from Japan to Singapore just yet. I am very aware, it would be during peak cherry blossom seasons so might be very hard. I’m trying to gauge what the expert of this topic (everyone here) would recommend in this situation.
Thank you
I think that you are in a good position. There are loads of flights from Tokyo to Singapore, so my advice is to retain your current reservations for a few months, whilst monitoring HND to LHR flights. (Possibly through Seatspy).
If you do decide to fly back via Singapore, then I would advise arriving in Singapore the day before your flight, as most travel insurance insists on a minimum connection time.
Enjoy your Japan visit.
Zipair could be one to check out they have a flat seat into Singapore with no frills service and the prices aren’t bad. Lands in late night which would give you the day in Singapore before your flight back that night
I’d also set up a seatspy and not book that flight until nearer the time
You could also look at flying HKG-LHR. I find the 6h+ trip from Japan too long of a detour unless you also plan to spend time in Singapore.
Book your Japan to Singapore/Hong Kong seats on miles now, so you can cancel easily without too much costs. Then set-up alerts via Seatspy and wait. Sometimes they can release extra award seats last minute.

Zipair will double their price as it gets closer…

Scoot also fly from Narita to Singapore, some good deals in their premium class
@HampshireHog Premium is so cheap for a reason!
Ok, thank you all for your advise. I will hold on to my current reservation and have setup a seatspy alert to see if i can change it, at a later date. I will hold off buying my transfer from HND to SIN for now to see if anything comes up in the next few months from HND to LHR.

Or book HND-SIN on JAL using Avios to ensure you have something and then can revisit once you know your plans? Looking at early May, a quick glance shows there is some availability in economy, premium economy, and business for this route.
You could also look at flying HND – DOH on Qatar Business Class and then on to LHR either via Qatar or BA.
At this point. I only have circa 30k points remaining so I don’t think I’ll get another points only flight.
seat spy won’t show you the extra availabilities opened by the 241 you used. Either find a mate who has one and ask them to check for you regularly or see if any kind souls here with one will check for you every so often (although if they did and post it on a public forum it might get snapped up before you even read it). Given you are booked at busy time I doubt any new availabilities will pop up unless someone cancels.
I see. That’s a good point. My dad has a 241 voucher. I’ll ask him to check for me 🙂
Looking at the way BA is resurrecting formerly cancelled routes, I wonder if we might see Osaka return in the not too distant future? They have the Expo over there next summer, so possibly one to be poised for.
