Hi there,
Looking for some advice / options to use up a mix of Avios and IHG hotel points. Objective is to maximize the use of points, but if a cheap Ryanair flight works out better than happy to hold on to points for example.
Can travel Friday 13th October returning Sunday 22nd and leaving from Glasgow, Edinburgh or Manchester.
300k Avios and 500k IHG points available.
Looking for somewhere sunny and preferably resort style for 2 adults and a 14 year old son.
Thoughts on options anyone ?
Thanks,
Roy.
Scottish School October week/fortnight.
Might get better/cheaper with Avios positioning flight to London as English schools don’t tend to be off until 23rd October.
If you’re set on short-haul, you might struggle a bit with IHG as they don’t have many European properties in resort-type locations. There’s the ICs Malta and Estoril but you’d be taking a chance with the weather in October. There are a few HIs/CPs/IC in the south of France around Nice/Marseille but probably even less guarantee of sunshine.
It sounds as though MAN might be your best bet for LCC flights if you want to avoid school holiday prices, though you may have missed the best fares by leaving it till now! If cash prices are very high you have the option of connecting from any of your 3 via London, availability allowing, which although is extra travelling, may save a fair bit, even though you have to pay for the domestic connections as well as the international sectors.
Yeah, I was thinking that Manchester may be good route out. Easy drive down.
Happy to travel a bit further away if we can burn IHG for something nice, or drop Avios to cover the flight costs.
The new IC in Ras al Khaimah looks nice and gets solid reviews, but you might struggle to find Avios availability to DXB. Probably easier to get flights to DOH, there’s also a resort-style IC there. Both have reward availability and the base room will fit three. Some of the new South-East Asian ICs and Regents look nice and have reasonable reward pricing.
@roydonaldson, do you have a BA companion voucher as that would give you more options?
There is avios availability to DXB in PE on those dates. It’s a pretty comfortable way to travel, especially as the flight is only about 7 – 8 hours.
DOH – only PE available in October (shame as there’s often F available on that route), BUT I think the BA service goes from LGW, can you still get there from EDI/GLA?
Have you looked at QR to DOH from EDI? You might find business class seats at standard pricing as it’s not English school holidays – though they might have cottoned on to Scotland!
DOH is not somewhere I would recommend for a holiday – the IC is ok but the windows are filthy having been sand blasted!
I’d rather take a chance on Europe somewhere – there is a Holiday Inn in Armacao de Pera which although in a rather ugly town is right on the beach with a very nice promenade right along coast and several nice restaurants within walking distance – you could open jaw into Faro and out of Lisbon and stay in either the IC Estoril or Lisbon.
