Forums Payment cards American Express Hotel cashback offers on BAPP

First of all – Merry Christmas to everyone

& Apologies if this question has already been asked before and answered

On my Amex BAPP I have multiple saved offers for various hotel chains for cashback and many of them expire end of this year.

If I was to book a non refundable rate for let’s say early 2023 (much later than the expiry date of the offer) and assuming payment is taken straight away will the cashback track. I’m concious as the T&C suggest “in-store only” grateful for any advice/previous experience

Yes it will track. Amex have no idea what the date of the stay is. As long as the hotel take the payment before the offer expiry it will activate the cash back.

However …. do not assume that the hotel will bother to charge you. A lot don’t bother until the day before you arrive, or not at all. After all, charging you on booking is actually extra work for them, because you are highly likely to spend homething in the hotel meaning they need to charge you again.

It’s easier for the hotel to NOT charge you in advance.

What this means is that you may need to call the hotel and ensure the payment is taken.

Also note that, whilst for all big chains this works fine, a reader did a similar offer with a small chain this year (forgotten which one annoyingly) and the pre-payment was taken by Head Office. This disqualified him for the cashback – Amex only pays if it is processed by a hotel – and of course there was no comeback as the rules did say ‘pay on departure’ only.

I converted two stays in 2023 to advanced purchase / prepayment rates for this purpose, and I messaged the hotel to charge me as soon as possible. I got emails from Amex that said “offer used”, so hopefully it will work for you, too.
