I’d like to leave London for a weekend in December to celebrate my birthday with my partner.
Anywhere that is not too much of a journey from London (~2 hours max by train or car), sense of luxury, great and cosy common areas with fireplaces where to spend a couple of hours reading, a bar and a restaurant on site. Something interesting to do in the vicinity.
Budget would be up to £500 for a 1-night break, but ideally less. Or about £700 for two nights.
Any recommendations?
We are a sucker for Lords of the Manor in the Cotswolds. Stunning property, beautiful walks locally and Michelin starred food. Going again there next spring as a Friday night stopover on the way to Dorset (that being too far to drive on a Friday after work). Best rooms are pricier but well worth it as they ate stunning.
Lords of the Manor looks good and within my price range. I can’t see many photos of the common areas though. Is there much space where you can lounge and relax? Do they have a fireplace?
Foxhill Manor on the Farncombe Estate. Exactly as you describe!
If you’ve got the Amex/Bonvoy offer (or better still, multiple of them) for £100 off a £400 spend, The Langley looks like it would be delightful in the Christmas season. If you booked via Emyr you’d get extra benefits as well as the cash back.
We loved Woolley Grange last Dec., although the weekend might be a bit kid-dy.
Walking distance from Bradford-on-A.
Rhinefield house, near Brockenhurst in the New Forest. Lots of cosy fireplaces, hotel will nice grounds for walking, walks in the New Forest and nearby towns.
Lots of great suggestions so far, thank you!
I hadn’t thought about the kid-dy dimension 😅

A new one for me, thanks @Tracey – looks fab!
Inn at Whitewell – can’t go wrong
Assuming you mean the one in Lancashire, do you travel by helicopter? 😂

Yes! 2 hours on the train to Preston and then jump in a 25 min taxi!
Can’t beat it. So perfect, Duchess of York used it for naughty weekends.

The restaurant at this hotel does not have a Michelin Star
The relatively new Crescent Spa Hotel in Buxton; all of Peak District around you. Historic building that has been lavishly refurbished.
@vetjames, next time we eat there I will keep my eyes peeled for such shenanigans – the Ribble Valley isn’t generally known for being a hotbed of iniquity 🤣

This place is… I used to work there during uni holidays. It was so much fun. You would not believe what goes on there.
