We’ve got an upcoming holiday in Scotland and are looking to break up the drive from Kent with an overnight stay on the way up (and another on the way back).
Can anyone recommend anywhere that’s not too far off the road? I’m loathe to go all the way into Leeds (although I do at least know the hotels there!) but a diversion into Harrogate or Darlington doesn’t look too bad.
It’s two adults and it’s just to sleep for the night so the most important factor is probably a comfy bed. I’d like to keep it under £200 (but obviously cheaper is better).
Bonus points if it comes with an EV charger!
There are a few HIs along the A1 which are often very cheap indeed. The one at Scotch Corner looks like a prison (we’ve driven past numerous times but never stayed!) We HAVE stayed at the one at J59 northbound and it was perfectly fine for one night – it’s also next to a service station so you would probably get your EV charger there.

Stayed at the Scotch Corner one. Food options in the area are limited, accomodation is dated/70s travelodge. But it’s clean and cheap.
Last trip to Scotland we did, we stayed at https://westlaytonmanor.co.uk/ which is a B&B a hotel, but it was superb
Well depends which of those is a priority. The A1 through North Lincs/South Yorks is something of a dead zone (unless you’re after the bizarrely located roadside sex shop) so around the Leeds or North Yorks is probably the place to look. Not sure I’d want to go into Harrogate unless you want to make it a destination visit and spend a bit of time there – traffic can be more annoying than Leeds to be honest.
If convenience is everything then the Wyndham in Wetherby services won’t be beat and is a LOT more modern and less tired than your average motorway Travelodge or HI. As a fairly newly built services I’d be certain there will be EV facilities.
Cheap and a comfy bed obviously = Premier Inn. There’s one right off the motorway at Pontefract.
But that’s all boring and you need something to look forward to. Somewhere very close to the A1 but actually nice – maybe with some grounds to wander in to unwind from a drive? Try Hazlewood Castle just off the A1/A64 junction. Lovely setting too, although hopefully you’re not travelling Saturday as it’s often block-booked for weddings.
Thorpe Paark falls into roughly the same category if you’re thinking of Leeds area. A lot more nondescript business hotel than Hazlewood, but pleasant enough and does have a decent pool if you’re after that. Convenient easily reached from A1.
You can also do map-based searches on booking.com (indirect through BA for Avios) and one of the options for filtering properties includes EV charging. Just search for hotels in England and then zoom the map to the areas you are interested in. That’s typically how I find decent places to stay near specific locations with good road access.
Why not stop in Durham? The Indigo is a very pleasant hotel, and Durham has several excellent restaurants that would transform a functional stop into a very pleasant evening. And a short pre-breakfast walk along the beautiful peninsula riverside path and returning through the historical centre would be a great way to start the following morning before the rest of the long drive.
The Indigo Durham is gorgeous but prices fluctuate wildly depending on the date. Also they have a 2 night minimum stay at weekends if you book direct, but not if you book via hotels.com – go figure!
