Having accumulated a reasonable amount of Avios, I was thinking of using speatspy to identify some opportunities.
Without subscribing, I was just looking at the main page which shows economy-only availability to see how it works. However, the availability I am seeing at seatspy on an example route – LON to MLA this summer – is nothing like what I can get on BA. Seatspy is showing 1 or 2+ seats available on multiple days in July and August for which BA says nothing is available.
Is that data on the main page, without logging in, significantly outdated, or is this representative?
In my experience, very.
But i looked at Malta and something definitely weird is happening. BA is only showing a handful of flights on the calendar but when you search for dates, more are appearing that aren’t on the calendar.
And American Airlines is showing some dates that BA are not despite it undoubtedly being BA inventory it is drawing from.
I’d almost be tempted to call the Executive Club to see if they can book dates that Seatspy are showing but BA are not!
Seatspy definitely got a problem. Was showing wrong info to NCE in early July at the weekend. Also always transfers wrong dates to BA booking engine when you click through.
I have found it to be wildly inaccurate recently, in both directions – availability that wasn’t there in reality and absence of availability when lots of seats. Also, notifications don’t necessarily turn up in the time frame paid for. Not sure what has happened as it used too be reliable.
Seatspy has been pretty good in the past however when looking for Virgin flights recently I noted:-
(1) Instant alerts were anything but
(2) I could book over the phone despite SS saying no award seats available
(3) The amount of miles it said was required was incorrect as the Carribean uses a different peak/off peak calendar
It has its limitations, but most useful when looking for a seat on a busy route. eg I wanted to fly to Mauritius any time over a 2 month period, but all booked up. The suddenly got an alert saying 2 had become available so managed to book immediately.
Not sure its worth checking routes which are readily available.
So after exchange my emails with seatspy it turns out that BA data is still showing imaginary seat availability in reward flight finder front page which is the date seat spy uses. Eg LHR-NCE 6july is showing fake availability.
Seatspy are stuck until BA fix their own problem
A few weeks ago there was the opposite problem – BA was showing no availability on many return legs when there actually was some and SeatSpy had the same issue. You can only know for sure by making a booking (or dummy booking) anyway, as someone could literally be booking the seats as you look.
