The key driver is NOT really what it costs in Avios but what the cost of the underlying World Traveller Plus ticket would be, which obviously varies from day to day. This means there is no simple answer to which option (full redemption vs upgrade) is better. An Avios upgrade to a cash ticket is also non-refundable whilst a normal Avios ticket can be cancelled. Is this important to you? Only you know that.
