Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios How did you get a Premier account on less than £75k?

For those of us on less than £75k, how did you get a Barclays premier account for the avios offer.

Did you say you earn 75k on the application or will they let you upgrade straight away and pay the £20. As on the app it will only let me open a standard account.

My own experience was that the app also only allowed me to open a standard account. I then left it a few days and booked a call with a Premier adviser. As I meet the net monthly income requirement of at least £3,330 the adviser upgraded me no problem.

Can I ask when you say on the app – is that the Barclays app or the Premium Plus AVios Barclaycard app, because I don’t see anything on the latter that lets me apply??

for the credit card i think you need to apply online, the current account the application is through the app

I applied for the basic current account and then upgraded that to Premier through the app. I received a letter saying they would waive the means testing for the first year. No sign of the 100K email yet, but hopefully it will come as it’s only been a few days.

Mine was through the Barclays app, which I downloaded separate to the Barclaycard app I was already using for my Avios Plus card. Their system did, however, create me 2 separate customer profiles which, when they later merged the profiles, seemed to trigger a series of technical issues which still aren’t fully resolved 3 months later. I too haven’t had the 100,000 Avios email despite meeting the criteria on 3rd October.

I take it when you first applied for it you put in your income as below £75k?

Yes, that’s right. And when I upgraded I put the same figure.

OK, we have now got to the bottom of this one.

As we already suspected, the Barclaycard website does not present this clearly. There is no option to open a Premier acccount with a salary of under £75k by paying £20 per month.

This is an option which is only available to existing Premier customers who lose their jobs or for other reasons no longer meet the £75k criteria. At their next account review date, they will be offered the chance to pay £20 per month as an alternative to having their Premier account closed.

But the first year is not means tested right?

It is at Barclays’ discretion whether to waive the requirement as they have for some posters above. If you answer the income questions truthfully (ie giving a sum under £75k) and thus go via the route of opening an ordinary account, then applying for an upgrade it is up to them whether or not to grant a Premier account.

I put this on the article page, but its also relevant here.

My wife, who has an existing BC Avios Plus card and Barclays current account, but did not meet the £75k income/£100k savings requirement, was able to upgrade to Premier banking in the app by truthfully confirming her current income (and switch on Avios Rewards). She received confirmation that she will get the 100k avios once she holds it for 4 months, and she also received confirmation that they do not check her eligibility for free Premier banking until she has held it for at least 12 months, at which point they would charge £20pm if not eligible, but would not charge in the meantime. Not sure how they would treat new customers to Barclays looking to upgrade to Premier, but she was an existing customer.

Very interesting. I’ll also be applying as a new Barclays Banking customer – have already been accepted for the Barclaycard Avios Plus credit card. May I confirm how long after opening a Barclays Bank Account you upgraded?

Lovely stuff. Just applied for an upgrade to Premier through the Barclays app and was upgraded immediately.

The welcome document confirms that the means testing and monthly fee is waived for the first 12 months.

Thanks for all of your help!

Not wanting to sound snobbish but I have also direct feedback from people I know and that always ask me for Avios advice and that I have often pointed to this website, that even on salary sub £30k they have been upgraded to Premier, with understanding that they will check eligibility after a year.. The £20 charge was designed for people that qualify for Premier but was not using the account any longer or as you said temporarily were earning less. It was not a way to get Premier without meeting the qualifying criteria (to be the website is clear when it state min earning or saving and that if qualifying because of earning but not depositing the £3300 per month, you would be charged £20 per month.

Not only this will potentially diluite the Avios value if they gave 100,000 Avios to basically anyone, but also the value of holding Premier accounts with Barclays (now reduced to one event invite per year to be fair) will also diluite greatly.

Prior to the upgrade, was your initial application via the premier product (and redirected due to the entry of a syb-£75k salary, or a direct application for the standard account? (Also, presume through the app?).

Other than the 100k Avios for signing up and the upgrade voucher which has limited use, what other ongoing benefits does the premier account have anymore? None that I’m aware of which is why I closed mine

Access to Mortgage preferential rates (which I have used few times), and other Barclays product offers from time to time. Premier customer service which has been great in the past (but will obviously get stretched with customer being upgraded without meeting the criteria and then also having issues with Avios (that has caused problems for existing customer too)).
Finally, I have been invited to special events hosted by Barclays Premier in the past, most recently an exclusive screening of the latest Jurassic Park movie. The old Premier rewards was indeed better, with free daily coffee and English Heritage membership, which I have made full use of in the years we had it.

They must like you better than me…;) I never received any offers/invites to anything when the English heritage/Majestic free drink etc finished and their customer service always left a lot to be desired when they got rid of the dedicated RM’s. Were the dedicated mortgage rates actually best in the market at the time of application?

Anyway plsd you seem to rate them better

I’m happier with my free £10/month from Natwest

There are people here willing to crawl over broken glass and give Uber a high level of access to their BAEC accounts in the name of 250 avios, there was never much hope for people to not try game this offer unfortunately

Yes, best rates I could get.

I also have RBS Premier Rewards (for the £10), HSBC Premier (for the free travel
insurance, although it almost duplicate my Amex Platinum), and Santander Select (for foreign free ATM usage were Santander operates). You do not really need to close any of them. I circulate my salary when I get it (within 2 minutes via mobile apps) and have proved in the past my qualifying criteria through P60, so I am good.

PS: almost forgot about the free Majestic bottle every so often..

Thanks for info re mortgage rates. Yes I also have the hsbc premier for the travel insurance as you said and use to cycle the salary between all 3 in the same way. Very easy to do and never any issues. I only shut the Barclays because of the shocking customer service. Unfortunately it was only a few months ago so I’m not able to reopen to take advantage of the 100k avios this time but crossing fingers it will come back… I think it will personally especially reading about all these people having issues book8mg appointments to get docs checked etc

Yes the majestic was very handy, esp as I walk past one on the way home!
