Forums Payment cards American Express How do i get to Thailand using Avois and a companion voucher??

  • 2 posts

Please can anyone advise of any hacks or strategies?? There are no flights ever to BKK. For my dates, the closest is Chennai in India – do I just book that and pay oop for the flight to BKK? Am I missing something? We have 2 companion vouchers to use and we wanted to take our children to Thailand in September this year. I know I haven;t given myself much time but 1 companion voucher runs out in Sept, the other in Dec.

Any advice greatfully received. I’m new to companion vouchers and avois – thank you

Other nearby options that BA flies to would be Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Singapore (SIN), and Hong Kong at a stretch. That’s the only way to use a companion voucher. Even in Economy looking 2 months ahead may be hard (Guaranteed Avios seats get released 355 days in advance). Use the Avios app, you can search for availability across months, and you can set availability alerts. Good luck.

Use Seatspy (probably a one month sub until you book tickets) and you can filter by number of seats, booking class and dates.

BKK route has limited seats and whatever is available is usually taken up quickly. BA doesn’t want to add more flights as the demand for cash tickets on premium classes is generally low compared to American routes and also because of flying restrictions over Ukraine / Russia.

In addition to above cities, you can also look at HYD or BLR.

Are the companion vouchers from the free BA card (just wondering as you say you’re new to this and they’re already at risk of expiring)? From different accounts? How many avios have you got?

Also – I think BKK on BA might be seasonal, which would be why you’re not seeing anything for September. If you can travel from the end of October you may have more luck, although I appreciate one of your vouchers will have expired.

Otherwise, apart from the suggestions above, look at using the vouchers and avios to a Middle Eastern city like DXB/DOH and connecting. I imagine QR flies to BKK (though I don’t know what award availability would be like at this point), so in theory anyway you could start on BA using avios plus your vouchers, then connect onto QR, on a separate booking.

Last year we did LHR to HKG on a 241 then Avios on Cathy to BKK. It was fine but if/when we do it again I’d probably look at changing in KUL instead.
