Forums Payment cards American Express How to downgrade my Amex Gold card?

  • 5 posts

If I got the new American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card, which comes with a £195/yr fee (is this pro-rata? Or will it be in October 2024?), if I want to downgrade to the British Airways American Express Credit Card, is that easy enough to do?

I want to join to get the bonus points but thinking the £195 fee may not be worth it for the “spend in month 15 and get 5000 points” as they’re only worth £50, right?

If so, the first question doesn’t really matter as I’d downgrade before the 12 months anyway.

Or do I just have “an account” with American Express and I can have two or three cards linked to that account, and the points are tied to that account?

    Not sure how it works.

    Thanks

There is no “downgrade” route from Gold to BA.

You can certainly have many cards with Amex. Two or three isn’t unusual. Some have upgrade/downgrade options within the same family of cards which are offered periodically, but are not assured.

If I get the Gold Card, I can cancel it before the year is up and get the BA one I guess?
Then the points just stay tagged to my account?

No the points won’t stay in your account since BA is a different Amex product. To prevent losing points you need to either transfer them out to any Amex partner such as BA, Hilton etc or open another Membership Rewards earning card such as the basic free one.
