Forums Payment cards Virgin Atlantic How to know what your credit limit will be for Virgin+ card

  • 13 posts

I’m looking to get the Virgin + card again when the next sign up bonus arrives. I have HMRC payments I could make through Curve but in order for this to work does anyone know to know what your credit limit will be before you are accepted? The higher my limit the more points I can earn as I pay off my tax bill however this could be achieved by making my payments on a more regular basis.

They used to be awful — turning down higher earners and handing out laughably low limits.

However, on my third or fourth application this time last year, I was accepted, and given a >10k limit.

I’ve closed the card a few weeks ago to avoid the annual fee recurring, as I’ve earned the sign up bonus and voucher. I have HH Barclays for ongoing non-Amex spend, otherwise I might have kept it.

Did you get rejected several times when you closed and reapplied?

Yes, I was rejected at least three times. I’d wait six months or so and try again.

Thanks for the data point! This puts me off cancelling and re-applying again after 6 months as want to move to plus card.

First R+ card in 2019 had a laughably low £2.8k limit. I accepted it as I wasn’t aware of the airmiles earning limitation (my fault, I know) but had I, I would have cancelled it immediately, stating that their limit was unacceptable, especially for such a fee card. I know others on here have said they have done so.

Instead I cancelled it the week before renewal and then reapplied last Autumn, the week before they boosted the bonus miles. This time I got a 9k limit, much more sensible.

Yes the + card was initially given to me at 3k then 6k. Then I requested to up it as I wanted to buy a watch at 8k and got it to 12.2k. Never missed a payment and always paid in full, I guess they are just trying to be more responsible at increasing limits and getting history?

Remember there’s a £10k/month limit on free HMRC etc transactions with Curve Metal now so having a big credit limit isn’t as important as it was. I definitely wouldn’t pay 1p/mile for Virgin miles which is the price if you exceed Metal limits.
