    Hi All

Confused about whether one needs to apply for the travel insurance product. On this page: https://www.hsbc.co.uk/insurance/products/premier-travel/#:~:text=You%20can%20apply%20at%20any,t%20complete%20a%20successful%20application.

It says that: “ Cover is provided by Aviva Insurance Limited. You must complete an application to be covered. ”

HSBC tell me on the phone it is automatic. Any ideas?

@TM once your Premier account is approved, one of the various next steps is to opt in to the insurance which is a regulatory requirement to confirm that you haven’t been sold or advised to take the insurance.

Once you have done that, you can go to the website to ask for a proof of cover/confirmation so you will know it has all been correctly activated.

If you didn’t set the insurance up during your application, then you need to do it separately. This is easier said than done – as I know from personal experience. When you call, you either get told you’re already covered automatically (when you’re not), or you get passed to Aviva, who then pass you back to HSBC and so on until you’re so dizzy you give up.

My advice is to go into a branch and ask them to get someone to phone you to sort – this was my solution, it took 5 minutes. Practically I found this the only way to get to the right person.

I was always told HSBC customer service was terrible but never quite believed it until that experience…!

There’s some odd law now which stops people being given / sold insurance without their express consent.

Amex Plat is the same. If you don’t tick a box on the application form, you’re not covered.

If you’ve applied for it as part of your application then you should be covered.

But worth requesting documentation confirming it which is requested through some Aviva site which is linked on the HSBC travel insurance page.

Thanks all. Unsure if my phone call did anything but I tried to get the proof of insurance on Saturday and it failed. Then tried again yesterday evening and it worked…so all sorted in the end!
