Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Iberia’s IT change: silver cannot select XL seats for free on short hauls

IB had an IT glitch that used to make it quite annoying to select a seat on any flight when you had OW status (for most of us here BAEC silver or Gold). Basically as you booked an economy short haul and selected a seat on their website or app you would be taken to payment screen. The trick was to simply ignore that, the seat would remain selected even if no payment was made.

They seem to have fixed that which is great. What is not so great is that you now have to pay for XL seats even if you are IB Gold, BA silver or OW saphire (OW emerald are ok). Their website clearly states that only OW emerald can select Xl seats for free (something I get for long hauls).

So that means on a short haul flight to Madrid form London the first half of the plane seats are payable for a BA silver or IB gold frequent passenger. Also, forget snatching those PE seats on the A330-350 that does LHR-MAD twice a day.

Maybe IB will notice and fix this, but right now they have made selecting them less attractive for many of us I suppose.

What are they “fixing” when it sounds like the IT reflects the fact their websites says only emeralds get free XL seats?

AFAIK only golds/emeralds can choose exit seats on short haul BA too?

They are fixing the fact their website did not allow any frequent fliers to select a free seat in the past. it does now and indeed follows the rules they have set on their website. it is just surprising to learn Sapphire customers cannot book many of the A320 seats and the front rows of the A330-350 (so basically you are not better off than a person that never uses them).

With BA you can select ALL seats including emergency exits on short hauls. For long hauls you need to be gold in order to select emergency exits when flying economy or PE.

I’m Silver and have been able selected exit rows on short haul and long haul BA routes recently (though in actual fact I ignored the available exit rows on my MAN-LHR connections as I prefer to be nearer the front and have my bag under the seat in front of me).

Apologies – I have just checked and I actually selected bulkhead seats but these are just as good IME! The main thing is not having anyone recline in your face lol.
