Forums Hotel loyalty schemes IHG One Rewards IC George Edinburgh on private sale for £189 – with wine, nibbles etc

  • 350 posts

Scottish daily deal website itison has the George Hotel in Edinburgh on sale for £189 from 2nd January to 31st March. Seven days, excepting 11 Feb and 12 and 18 Mar.

    https://www.itison.com/Edinburgh/deals/intercontinental-edinburgh-the-george-stay

Overnight stay for two in classic double or twin including a bottle of wine, charcuterie board, hot chocolate & sharing brownie dessert in the room plus breakfast

    Upgrades:
Saturday stays: £15per room per night
Superior room: £15 per room per night.

What ever happens if, as IHG Diamond, you phone direct and ask for a price match with a little extra? Would you get a free upgrade? Just interested – already have a small flat just round the corner, so not a useful deal for me.

Sort of interested in this also, although suspect they won’t match as they won’t view ‘itison’ as a direct channel to book.

I had a peruse of itison over breakfast this morning, there are some good deals!

This offer for the George is excellent, especially as the classic rooms are one up from entry level (which doesn’t have twins). I’m humming and hawing now as I’d booked a 2 night break in Jan in Edi and recently moved it from the George to the Kimpton, because the Kimpton has parking and a pool. Torn again now!

@ColinMacKinnn, feel free to report back any price matching success. Not sure if the property has an in-house sales for smaller bookings.

While there is no denying what a good deal the offer is in terms of money, the two hotels are, in my experience, chalk and cheese. I’d avoid the IC and stay in The Kimpton every time. So much more comfortable and friendly. The IC does not seem able to provide even one member of staff who is capable of a smile, so different in The Kimpton and as you say, the pool is an added attraction.
I have not ever felt “welcome” in the IC!

I’ve stayed at both (George once, Kimpton twice), found the George more formal, definitely, but I got fantastic status recognition at both and the George is better located, I think, for the major sights. I’d happily stay at both, but I’m taking my mum on the next trip and she likes swimming and her dodgy hip will thank us for the valet parking!

@Paul B Won’t be able to report back, since we have a little pied-a-terre in Edinburgh just next to the Playhouse.

Know Edinburgh is popular with HfP-ers, and was interested if anyone wanted to be a guinea pig, since there are IHG hotels elsewhere (like York and Newcastle) that usually come up with deals too.

@Northern Lass For me, the east end of the New Town is the happening place – all due to me buying my first flat in York Place there in the 1980s! The West End used to be the hub, with William Street, Usher Hall, Filmhouse and super late-night pizza restaurants etc.

But now on the east you have the new St James Centre, the Playhouse, the new Gleneagles Hotel, a new concert hall due to be built, the old Jenners building being transformed and great bars, cafes and restaurants in Broughton Street.

And, of course, Calton Hill – when I came out of Waverley and saw it, Edinburgh grabbed my heart. The Photographers Cottage in Rock House, through that little cast iron door in the rock as you climb up onto Calton Hill is a great wee airbnb. The most amazing view right down Princes Street!
