    Good morning all.
    My brother and his missus were due to return today on a Wizz Air flight from Tenerife, but last night they got an email that their flight has been cancelled. No alternatives were offered.
    He managed to get in touch with them and he was told to book return flights on his own and then contact customer service.
    I thought the law was that the airline must offer suitable return flights and offer accommodation if required, but looks like Wizz Air doesn’t bother with this.
    Should I advise him to book everything on his own and the claim the money back plus compensation? Or to contact Wizz Air to tell them of EU261 law?

    You are correct that EC261 obliges the carrier to inform the passenger of their rights including rerouting and duty of care.

    However they’ve already been told to book their own flights and contact Wizz after the event so that is what they should do.

    Keep receipts of all expenses including food and drink and possibly hotel if they are only able to travel tomorrow or the day after.

    Then submit their claim to Wizz on their return mentioning EC261/2004.

    Or

    If they have travel insurance maybe claim off that?

    He is concerned that everything is super expensive to book now and he might struggle to get the costs refunded from Wizz.

    Are there any limits to flight costs? Or just keep them reasonable?

    They will expect you to claim from the airline first.

    You can spend what is reasonable (keep screenshots showing it was cheapest etc but actually getting something looks like a challenge. One possibility albeit rather miserable is Jet2 to Newcastle tonight then the first train to London. Otherwise it looks like Wizzair has a flight to Luton on Monday night, might be better off transferring to that and claiming a hotel night in Tenerife instead

    Is it not reasonable to just continue staying in current accommodation? If it’s high cost, would they not pay out?

    My feeling is, if it went to court, someone who remains in a £500 per night hotel would be reimbursed whilst someone who moves into one would not.

    Well, he contacted Wizz Air again and the agent proposed a return flight to Gatwick on Wednesday. He has to return asap, the only solution he found were 2 separate flights with an overnight stay for which he paid almost £1000 which is a lot considering they are low cost. Hence why he was concerned it could take a while to get this refunded from Wizz Air.

    Prices went up like mad the past weeks, especially low cost.

    Flight from Faro ( to lhr) just cancelled (or delayed overnight.. ?). after scheduled flight time. ( hope to get alt in morning)…. Son going back to his original hotel. To avoid the hassle of trying to find something cheaper and risk missing out on everything .. it’s. £400 pn room. ( obviously already checked out).. . What are the chances of BA paying this and standard compo?

    They usually pay £200 + food (no alcohol) and transport.

    To be honest if he was already at the airport then the argument to stay where you already stayed doesn’t carry much weight, it’s no hassle to open up booking.com and find something local and I suspect there were plenty of reasonable airport hotel options under that

    It’s an overnight delay so they’ll be flying in their original seats. The only thing is there likely isn’t any catering unless it was a planned overnight before it left London and they put night stop breakfasts in ice boxes
