My wife & I each have a Premium Plus card account, with us each having a supplemental card for the other’s (IYSWIM). My wife’s collected her Companion voucher, so we’re switching all our spending to my card. We’re considering downgrading hers to the free card and saving the remainder of the fee, but we don’t want to have issues when we resurrect it once I’ve got my voucher and we switch back. Is it a simple process to re-upgrade, and has anyone first-hand experience of doing this over a number of years?
Recent comments have said that some people are denied upgrading back to the PP card. I had never heard this previously so prehaps the trend is against people exploiting this loophole.
@shaunpond – while Amex always appears desperate in allowing all sorts of shenanigans there is, as suggested above by @Roberto, now evidence of some pushback against fee dodgers, both for the protection of regular cardholders and Amex P&L.
If your aim is to earn 1 voucher each every year then I’d say you should retain both cards and pay the fees, forget about trying to game the system. €300 isnt a lot to pay for the voucher.
If on the other hand you only want 1 voucher per year, then it would make sense to cancel one of the cards.
There is some minor talk of losing your companion voucher if you no longer have your premium BA card.
When you talk to Amex CS, they’ll offer the opportunity to downgrade to the free card in order to protect the voucher.
At some point you’ll use that voucher and then realise that actually you aren’t that far from the spend target on a BAPP for another voucher. Therefore you may decide that you want the BAPP again.
In order to save a complicated or confusing conversation with Amex CS about upgrading back to a BAPP, use the following link instead:

That does look straightforward, but is it that simple, and automatic? I’d hate to start having to fight for the upgrade each time if they started querying it…
@shaunpond – if you would “hate to start having a fight for the upgrade each time …” there’s always the rather outlandish option of simply paying the full fee each year like most people rather than expecting others to subsidise it for you. Anyway, you probably needn’t worry that “each time” is too often as Amex is getting rather less tolerant of gamers these days.
