Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Is it me or have BA short haul flight prices gone crazy this year?

I am seeing a lot of BA economy flights between May-November in continental Europe around £200-300 range at the cheapest? Club Europe is at least £400 in some destinations. Has anyone noticed this?

A couple of weeks ago I updated the ‘160 tier points’ list for an article which contains the cheapest flight available on each route as per BA Low Fare Finder.

Very few had changed by much and few had gone up by more than inflation.

Of course, this doesn’t account for how many of those cheap seats are there, but the very cheapest tickets are as cheap as they were.

I also haven’t booked a single cash short haul flight all year, which means that I never thought the ‘cash vs Avios’ cash option stood up when factoring in loss of flexibility.

I am paying £250 to go to Madrid from LON when it should be around £100. In some flights J is cheaper than Y or just £10 more!

For No-Dec flights prices go back to where they should be. SO maybe capacity is coming back to normal and we should see prices stabilise in 2025.

I’ve noticed this over the last few months too. Selecting specific flights I take semi-regularly I’ve noticed the price has increased noticeably, even looking several months out. There are still cheaper options, but like-for-like it does seem more expensive

My friends who fly regularly to/from Spain (often with LCCs) are complaining that the cheap seats they used to rely on are increasingly hard to find, often impossible. This might be specific to their routes, times and airlines, but they fly often enough I’m inclined to think they are detecting a trend.

I know, for work I have to fly Y and I felt bad about my latest fare to Switzerland from
London, even if I wasn’t paying for it.
    Ridiculous.

Just supply and demand. There are cheap flights, and I was surprised to find last-minute (less than a few days) Avios. CE seems to have no deals.

I’m with Rob – Avios redemptions are king for me this year. As @Ihar has discovered last minute availability is usually plentiful especially in CE . I’ve got Majorca booked in Oct but if the weather is a washout we’ll may flip to somewhere else last minute or just stay home. Can’t do that with Easyjet!

There are cheap flights around but they’re usually anti social times (I was looking at Ryanair to Girona – the cheap ones land there at 01:00 and leave there at 05:50 to get back to London!) and with kids I need at least some luggage so even a cheap flight isn’t that cheap in the end.

One trick if you’re brave enough is to utilise BA same day change – I recently booked a 7am flight back from Nice for €70 and flexed it at 1am local time to a later flight that was selling for €450 (in economy!) when I booked. However not something I’d attempt with family and if I couldn’t make the original flight if it came to it

Had to book some last-minute flights for my in-laws due to health issues (nothing serious, they just wanted to be home). Good CE availability and of course good baggage allowance.

This. Living up north I’d much rather get a direct flight on short-haul routes, but the lack of flexibility is off-putting when you have to book so far out to get a decent price. Ryanair is currently selling flights up to October ’25! EasyJet has a fairly reasonable change policy, but they’re the only LCC I’d take a risk on.

I’ve just booked East Midlands to
Murcia in June on Ryanair. The headline price of 60 pound return was nothing like in reality.

I tried to get hold of their customer service to try and request a seat for the infant, seeing as they charge £25 each way just to have them on your lap. It was excruciating. They make it so difficult.

As a few have mentioned this week, BA CE (despite me not having the greatest of flights the other day) is a pretty chilled way to go.

I’m also in the club of using the avios for the SH, as the flexibility is something that without looking into, I imagine LCC just do not have.

One last thing, it’s a shame BA don”t fly to Murcia but I’m guessing it just wasn’t overly successful

Being near MAN, I think I’d be looking to see if I could do MAN-MAD-RMU on IB, though the timings might not be great.

@yorkshireRich BTW There were BA flights from LGW to MJV Murcia San Javier airport operated by BA franchise GB Airways. GB Airways inflight magazine MedLife frequently featured the La Manga golf resort. GB Airways was sold to easyJet.
