Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Is the upgrade voucher useless for short haul?

  • 3 posts

    So I’m looking at using my soon to be expiring Barclaycard upgrade voucher and because of how it quotes prices with the voucher LRH-MXP return is 19,500 +£1 with the voucher or 17,000 + £50 without! Making the voucher worth about £30 what an awful perk! I fly this route regularly and wanting to fly club on this occasion for the baggage perk! Any ideas of anything else to do with it before it expires at the end of the year?

    If I had failed to allocate the voucher to off peak long haul, I’d throw in the towel a fortnight out and let it expire. No point throwing good money after bad.

    You’ve still got plenty of time to use it, so it depends what your travel plans are. There are many long-haul uses for the voucher, it’s hard to suggest anything without knowing what sort of places you like!

    Remember you can use the voucher for someone else, so you could always treat someone!

    Like most vouchers they have their own sweet spots and their value is personal to the holder.

    But you may regard the CE benefits as being more than £30

    How much would it cost to take an extra bag with your usual economy ticket? How much will being able to have a bite to eat in the lounge and on board save you in not having to buy a sandwich and coffee in the terminal.

    And surely thst’s better than just tossing it away?

    Bit what of the altarnative now available to Barclays vouchers – 7,000 avios? How much are they worth?

    I’ve used one for ATH in October, think it worked out at 27k avios plus £1. Just looked on the BA app, and that flight is now £1041! But off the top of my head I don’t know what the avios price would have been without the voucher.

    It was bugging me, so I just checked and the price with the voucher was 27,500 avios plus £1. Pricing it up without the voucher gives me 48,500 avios plus £1, so that does feel like decent use of it. The value definitely increases the further you go!

    Hi @NorthernLass
    Pls remind me, it’s max avios on short haul, but regular combo for long haul with this BC voucher? So it could be quite valuable in that case?
    Wasted one on CE last year but might chose voucher over avios, if it can work out better on long haul. TIA

    Lots of interesting replies here @BA Flyer IHG Stayer the £30 saving is based on the total saving of using the voucher for CE or just booking a standard Avios CE ticket! We are comparing like for like but just using a up voucher to save some Avios on a route that I will for sure do by then end of the year.

    I had forgotten that they have brought in 7,000 Avios instead which in this case is better but unfortunately that wasn’t an option back then!

    Yeah unfortunately it looks like you do need to travel further which is great if I didn’t have a partner that normally always comes along! If I tell her I’m in CE or CW for a long flight and she’s not, I don’t think the Avios saving will match the other costs that will be incurred!

    Love that final paragraph… @wobwob but yes it seems LH is where the best value is to be gained from the bc voucher

    Meant to say @Anna, well done on that ATH redemption btw! Loved my CE from DUB to LCY one evening when the last seat went for approx approximately £820. Very foggy night, delays etc. offered up my seat for 200€ but they wouldn’t accept it, queue of biz people desperately trying to get back. Felt really bad for them. We were all huddled in the lounge for hours. DAA lounge let us all stay on an extra hour whilst they were cleaning and stocking up for the morning.

    @wobwob, you can use the voucher for 2 people outbound, to get round that issue! Then book the inbound at full avios, or for cash, or return with a different carrier. We did this just before Xmas, outbound to DXB with the voucher and returned direct to MAN on QR.

    @polly
    , no, it’s always highest avios option, but the DXB trip cost 85k avios plus £350 for 2 of us one way when a return cash fare in CW was heading towards £3k. We got to sit upstairs on the A380 in 53J & K, and £260 each for delayed take off, so it was a great trip all round!!

    Agree – I redeemed one to ATH last year too and thought it was very good value.

    Used another to Rome last year for the Ryder Cup when cash prices were through the roof, so a very genuine cash saving and a worthwhile redemption.

    @wobwob – if you have a soon to be expiring voucher then I imagine you also have a second voucher?

    If so then two vouchers = a return trip for two people so you could whisk your partner away to one of the many long haul destinations BA offers in luxury, take her to a super romantic spot, look deep into her eyes and ask if she’d like to be your player 2.

    Then get referring!

    Yes, but on short haul the max Avios £1 option is rarely good value. As I already have lounge access the CE benefits are marginal and on an economy Avios fare the minimum Avios option allows me to buy Avios at around 0.85p

    I have two expiring in the next few months. Considered using one this morning for OH to fly to Faro, but way to expensive. (He travels light).

    A redemption is 245000 Avios + £1 (return)

    Flights with FR/U2 are £99

    £100 for an adjacent empty seat and lounge access? Not worth it IMO

    Might have been if he was checking in bags.

    Not used Avios for short haul since before covid.

    @HampshireHog, I’m Silver and happy just to have the lounge/seat selection benefits on a short flight, but anything over 3 hours and that free middle seat really makes a difference!

    I’d normally select the old RFS price, but of course that’s not an option with the upgrade voucher so you need to look harder to get good value from it.

    @Alex G – 245k avios definitely too expensive for Faro 🤣
