Discuss today's stories:
I’ve got a (new-style) 2-4-1 burning a hole in my pocket along with a £850 KLM compensation voucher. I know KLM is a different alliance, so it can’t be used in conjunction with the 2-4-1, but I wondered if any Avios experts out there could use the KLM voucher to their advantage. Positioning, for example? I’m pretty new to the points game, so just wanted to make sure there isn’t something obvious that I’m missing…
Positioning flights would certainly be a good option, especially if you decide to use the 241 starting ex-UK, as long as you build in enough layover time to mitigate any delays.
£850 is a lot to fritter away on AMS positioning flights though. Any further afield in Europe via an AMS connection, and it starts to becone a bit complicated for a positioning flight.
What are the terms of the flight voucher? KLM generally lags behind Delta’s site in adjusting prices upwards. Dublin to a US East Coast city can be had for £1200 routinely. I’d be inclined to enjoy such a trip courtesy mostly of the KLM voucher and forget trying to complicate matters re positioning for a BA 2-4-1
If you use the 241 wisely, it will be 2 trips!

And KLM to position to trip 1 start… eg MIA?
Exactly. Though hopefully they won’t leave your luggage in AMS as they did the only time we flew with them.
Though, if one-way flights are really expensive as they are with BA etc, the KLM part might have to start and finish one or more of the trips as a return journey spanning a longish period.
As discussed in another thread, KLM do have some fifth (?) freedom flying. You could use the 2-4-1 down to Singapore (probably need to fly out of the regions to get availability) and then treat yourself to business class down to Bali
Thank you for all the suggestions – having read the other thread about creative uses for the 2-4-1s it has certainly piqued my interest in getting the most out of the voucher. What are people’s opinions of business class on KLM business? Worth trying if I’m getting an £850 discount?
