Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Is there a way to rescue Silver?

  • 24 posts

I’m currently on 410 tier points with a collection year end of 8th April.
Did have club world flights for Venice where we were due to have flown yesterday which would have got me the silver tier but had to cancel as my partner has a positive Covid test result.
I’ve submitted everything to get a voucher for the cancellation but other than booking something quickly is there any way to get silver?
Assuming there is no way to extend the collection year end because of our circumstances?
If I do have to book something any advice on the most cost effective way of doing this?

Highly unlikely there will be any flexibility in this. A short-haul return booking anywhere earning full tier points would be sufficient (Y,B or H fare class) to get 20 each way, though you would probably find it cheaper to book one way business (40 points) and the other cheapest possible economy (or even a redemption in the other direction if you have the minimum 4 revenue sectors required).

Some longer short haul routes (Greece, the Canaries and a handful of others) get twice as many tiers points, in which case a return in a cheaper K,L,M,N,S,V would get you 20 each way. However bear in mind that even those routes only get 10 tier points each way in the lowest fare buckets (Q,O,G).

If you’re starting from London, Dublin may be a good option to check out.

also if you earn any points in the first week or two after the date of your collection year ending you can call up and ask for them to be applied to the previous year. I did this to salvage silver a few years ago.

    Thanks!
Looks like there will be a there and back trip next week.

I’ve done a Paris daytrip in CE on the last day before!
Btw, I’d confirm it, if it’s still in place, should be a 2-week “grace period” after
8 April, in case that’s of any use?

Other people are reporting that BA are not allowing the two week grace period because of the lower thresholds.

And as it’s not a stated benefit or policy it’s not something you can insist on.

A quick back to back or day trip will be the easiest way to get your TPs before your year ends.

Good airports for a back to back include AMS as arrivals decants into the gate area so no immigration or security to complicate things.

Isn’t LHR-MAN-LHR in CE 40 tier points? That said, you may have to queue for 3 hours to get through security on your return, not to mention the superlative customer experience with the staff, so you might have a better experience going to Dublin or Paris!

Yes it 40 is but it’s not a back to back doable airport because arrivals are separated from departures.

Just do a domestic return in Club Europe for 40 tier points. Go and have a nice weekend in Edinburgh or Newcastle.

WHy would anyone voluntarily go to Manchester or MAN? 🙂

@HarryT, I did add a caveat! It’s a very short trip for 40 tier points though. You could have a night at the well-known 5* Britannia hotel and make a weekend of it (except Sunday services have been cut back to about 3 flights per day, making it a real cattle-truck experience).

I wonder if it’s available as a BA Holiday? 🤣

There is no love for the regions from BA at the moment, it’s true! I am waiting for the late evening flight from NCL to be reinstated.

That hotel does not quite look worth the trip, even if it is an hour flight 🤣

I think I would do a trip to Edinburgh for the weekend to get the 40 TPs, unless a continental europe flight was much cheaper.

Indeed, and CE to Europe can be quite a bit cheaper than LHR-MAN!

We stayed at the Britannia years ago before you could book travel online and do some research about your hotel. Even then it was the kind of place you tried to leave as soon as possible!

There was a great travel article in the “i” newspaper yesterday about what to
do on a w/end in Belfast.

Friends don’t let friends stay at that particular hotel.

CAREFUL: BA considers the 450 points an “offer” and to grant the 2 weeks grace period another “offer”.

You can get one or the other but not both.

People here have mentioned that when trying to use points on the 2 weeks grace period they have found BA expected they had 600 points for silver.

Sooner than later esp as prices tick up for Easter and we’re almost there.

Everyday is school day on HfP — I could easily have relied on that at year end had that not been flagged here.

I was planning the same too – hearing this makes me glad I switched my upcoming Athens flights to Aegean – I’m aiming for Star status now. Have given up on BA. Plan to use for long haul redemptions only using vouchers only

I am also planning on just redeeming this year and for the foreseeable, but I’m a handful of TPs short of silver and the seat selection in club world is very handy…
