Conrad is about 20-min walk to Ginza. There is not much to do in the immediate surroundings and not many nice restaurants either. Depends on your preference. I usually aim for 28-32sqm rooms in Japan. Conrad is great, but location is not its forte, especially for first timers.

    Thanks Meta.
It’s difficult to search for hotels by room size (actually impossible I think) so it is taking me quite some time to filter results.
What I am finding is that hotels in and around Shinjuku with rooms greater than 25 sqm are upwards of £250pn for fully flex rates. Generally not including breakfast, or any reasonable sized pool (pool not important TBH, but a useful bonus).
An example includes the Citadines Shinjuku.
So I was thinking that the equivalent of £325 pn is not too bad at the Conrad with all the benefits and customer service expectations (and service recovery for that matter). Especially if the rooms are generally 48sqm. BTW the room photos don’t look anywhere near 48sqm. I have sent them a query because I suspect the room size includes the large bathroom and separate toilet.

Do you have any thoughts on that?
    Or any specific hotel recommendations?

    Thanks.

Conrad standard rooms are big. They are one of the biggest standard rooms in Tokyo. There is no question about that. They are great even if decor is a bit dated, but it’s maintained well. I would personally only stay in bay view rooms as the city view is a bit meh. I am just not keen on location if the purpose of the trip is to have a nice room and sightsee.

Hilton Shinjuku also has very good sized rooms, but after some renovation it’s more expensive in points, but oddly much less in cash than Conrad. It’s in better location.

You are going to have to make compromises.

After last trip and seeing how easy it is for sightseeing, I would also recommend Kimpton. Standard rooms are 28-30sqm.

Any thoughts on the ANA IC? location looks meh, the rooms seem to be 28sqm or more and the hotel looks to have undergone a refurb very recently (might even be ongoing I think?)

I’ve never stayed there. Roppongi is far removed from
    anything remotely interesting.

We are staying there in July. If you book the right room with an Ambassador weekend voucher you get upgraded into one of the refurbished suites. The new rooms look very nice and it has an outdoor pool.

Genuine question – why pay an extra £100+ per night for and extra 5-10m2 of floor space unless a) you are going to be spending a lot of time there or b) money is no object?

Yikes, glad I booked my stay earlier. The Citadines Shinjuku is in a good location, though I’ve not been in

Agreed the Kimpton is fine but generally overpriced for what it is in my view. Odd room designs too

If you can get a premium room as an upgrade at Kimpton is good. Points bookings are better value if they are around 80k.

IC The Strings is far removed from places, but it’s well connected to both Shinjuku, Ginza and Asakusa. It’s also good for shinkansen.

Right, thanks for all the input.
Having discussed with Mrs Aston, we’ll likely be out most of the day, every day. So it doesn’t make much sense for us to spend shed loads on a city hotel where we’ll only really be around for breakfast and sleeping.
Because the Conrad represents exceptional value @95k per night (we’ll be given a bay view room they said), I will shortlist that. They confirmed the room is 48 sqm, but I still can’t see how that is possible based off the photos.

I’ve had a good look at the ‘executive’ double room at the Citadines Shinjuku. Nowhere near as good as the Conrad, however it is 27/28 sqm (above average); the location seems good (walkable to some evening entertainment and a train station); price is 2/3 of the Conrad. If all we need is a large room to sleep in, then this also makes it onto my shortlist, despite being very different to the Conrad.

I’ve decided to drop the IHG properties since I’m no longer Diamond so will need to cough up for breakfast and unlikely to get an upgrade at such a peak time.

    Thanks again.

Just been looking at hotels in Tokyo for next April and prices are pretty high. Does anyone have any good value for money suggestions in the Shinjuku area?

For @meta and any other frequent visitor to Japan, do you know of any banks that allow you to open up a bank account? We are frequent visitors to Japan but I don’t hold a residence permit. My spouse is Japanese and my parents-in-law reside in Japan. Would ideally like to access the Japanese Credit Card market but seems that most of them require you to hold a Japanese bank account first. Many thanks.

Your spouse can open a bank account if she holds Japanese passport, hanko and has a Japanese address and phone number. You won’t be able to open an account unless you have residence permit (zairyū card), Japanese address and hanko.

Edit: for credit cards, you’ll need income paid into your Japanese bank account (and different cards have minumum requirements) plus health insurance card.

Many thanks. My spouse does hold a Japanese passport and can use her parents’ address in Japan. Seems like credit card will be a no go though as income paid into a UK bank account.

I’m looking at booking a one way Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka at the end of October (I believe can be booked 30 days in advance). I’ve looked on the jr-central site, which I think is the official one, and green class seems to be about £200 per person. I’ve been getting adverts for klook, so looked on there and they seem to be offering them at US$140 each. Has anyone used them before and recommend them or otherwise have any tips for booking please?

Also, I will be basing myself in Osaka for 5 days and plan day trips to Kyoto, Kobe, Hiroshima etc. I believe there’s a local train pass I can get, any pointers for this?

    Thanks in advance!

This is the official website to book Tokaido Sanyo Kyushu shinkansen tickets

    https://smart-ex.jp/en/index.php

I’d avoid Klook no matter how attractive they are as if something goes wrong you’ll be stuck in never ending loops of who holds the information and then who is empowered to make a decision. You don’t want to be dealing with Japanese bureaucracy when on holiday.

And this is the official website for Kansai-Hiroshima Pass

    https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/kansai_hiroshima/

Remember that you cannot book seats for online reservations for any train company between 11:30pm and 5:30am Japan time. So that means that you will not be able to choose and will be allocated seats randomly, but you can change them later free of charge.

And get yourself Suica or IC card to load all the train tickets on and for other useful stuff.
