Have any of the Japan regulars here registered for the Trusted Traveler Program?
It seems to be fairly low profile, Japan’s version of Global Entry: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/publications/materials/ttp2_index.html
Despite going to Japan multiple times before and since the COVID closure, I’ve only just discovered it!
From reading about it, it seems to be a fair amount of bureaucratic hassle to get it set up while inside the country. However, it allows you to bypass the immigration queue at the airport and use the e-gates, and even more importantly it allows you to just carry the small TTP card in your wallet while you’re in Japan rather than carrying your passport with you at all times. For me, the convenience of that alone might be worth it.
Most UK passport holders would probably apply via “Category D”, which requires you to prove that you hold a Platinum card or equivalent (basically a slightly strange way of showing that you have financial means).
Some more info:
I think it’s a waste of time unless you travel to Japan at least once monthly. Never had to wait more than ten minutes in immigration queue in Japan on arrival or departure.
The blog says the card needs to be renewed every 12 visits, which incurs the (small) fee again which you have to pay at a post office or convenience store. Doesn’t sound worth it unless you know you always take a flight which lands at a busy time
