Forums Hotel loyalty schemes IHG One Rewards Just checking the maths on the Washington DC redemption

  • 18 posts

I have a trip booked to Washington DC in October and just want to check I’ve understood the article of HfP correctly before I buy IHG points.

I can see the Vignette Hotel in WDC has a flat rate of 25,000 per night and the IHG website (via the link on HfP) is showing me an available 80% bonus on purchases of 5,000 points upwards, so it looks like I’d need to buy 42,000 (+ 33,600 bonus points) for $ 420 (approx. £340) in order to have 75,600 points to cover my three night stay.

When I look at the cash price, its £ 346 per night(!) so I just wanted to check I’ve understood this right as it seems to good to be true!?

    Thanks

Welcome to HfP. Assume you haven’t read the below article?

Yep – just making sure I’ve understood it correctly, as I’ve not got any experience with hotel loyalty schemes/points.

You need to factor in a compulsory $30 resort fee per night and also $60 parking per night if relevant. Otherwise your numbers are good.

Maths looks ok to me but make sure you are comparing the same room for the points rate as for the cash rate and the cash rate doesn’t include breakfast for example.

Just thought I’d check in here to say I stayed at the Vignette hotel Washington DC using the 25K points deal on Monday/Tuesday this week.

Location is great and the rooms are well appointed, if a little different (concrete floors with rugs). Received an upgrade as Diamond member and opted for the breakfast voucher. Breakfast itself is a little odd: your voucher is redeemable at the small deli on the ground floor, but we managed to grab a tasty breakfast sub and decent coffees each, which did the job and was in keeping with the overall vibe of the place.

    Couple of tips:
If you’re driving, park over the road in the public underground carpark for $30 for a full overnight 24 hours parking (vs the $60 valet fee at the hotel).
Don’t request amenity points on check in as you seem to get those regardless if you choose breakfast or a drink.
Had a fabulous meal at McCormick & Schmick’s restaurant – about a 20 minute walk from the hotel.

A great stay – highly recommended. First time in Washington, really enjoyed it. Thanks for the heads up on this deal Rob.

It’s a great city – I don’t know what OP’s plans are but I can recommend the (free, pre-bookable) guided tour of the US Capitol. You can even have a reasonably-priced meal in the canteen afterwards! Whatever you think of the USA, they know how to do visitor experiences.

Yup – sadly we only had 48 hours there, as this was part of a wider trip to a rock festival in MD. But Washington is a great city from the relatively small part we were able to experience – we clocked a total of 46,000 steps in two days! Thankfully we had good weather. Did a day in Baltimore around the harbour too which was very cool.

Definitely planning a return at some point as there’s clearly a lot more to see and do.
