Was having a discussion with a family member and I was wondering what HfP readers think.
Say you call up AMEX with a minor complaint and they apologise and offer you X,000 MR points.
Would you ever negotiate for more?
No, I would be grateful. They do not need to offer anything
Not if it’s a minor complaint. You make a minor complaint so they can rectify it, or stop the same thing happening in the future.
Sometimes a simple “sorry” is all that is needed and an offer of miles is better than that.
I’m with @Froggee on this. An offer of any amount of miles seems a reasonable result.
Just for context – I reached out to AMEX a couple months ago when I first got my Platinum card because I was told I can pay in monthly instalments from day one but that wasn’t the case; they explained I had to wait at least 3 months before this was possible. They apologised and offered me 5,000 MR points. I accepted.
Fast forward to this past weekend, I was talking to a family member about how you have to wait 3 months before you can pay monthly and mentioned the MR points. She insists I should’ve asked for at least 10,000 since they gave me incorrect information to start with.
Anyway, I was just curious about your thoughts. Thank you!
Having now told us the context, you did well to get anything at all. The agent made a small and inconsequential mistake – firms are allowed to make mistakes and here we are talking about a concessionary policy, not a term. The FOS would not award anything for something like this unless you could show some harm.
It never seems a good idea to press Amex on paying monthly as it gives the impression you can’t really afford the card calling their credit assessment/suitability into question.
I would say that some people always suggest you should have got more and you did a bad job in your decision.
I have a family member like that – you may have got a good price/discount etc but they could have got it cheaper or better in some way.
In this case I think you did well to get something, so be pleased and don’t worry about might have beens…especially ones that very likely wouldn’t have been.
