Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Just Starting Out – A Bit of Clarification?

  • 6 posts

Pretty new to HfP and recently got a BC Avios Plus card. Trying to get my head around a lot of the info on the site. I noticed in the BC T&Cs that it states “bookings must be Reward Flight bookings, paid for using full Avios redemption where you pay with your Avios plus a cash amount for taxes, fees and carrier charges”

I also noticed that @Northernlass stated in another thread (New York) that….

You have to use the maximum avios anyway with the Barclays voucher, so there’s no way of changing the amount of avios/cash you use.

Given the above does that mean that the flight can only be booked with Avios points (no avios+cash option at all – does that even exist)? I realise that taxes, fees and carrier charges need to be paid separately in cash.

Or does it just mean that you have to use the maximum avios+cash option available on the particular flight (i.e. you cant use more cash and less avios)?

Also is the avios+cash (maximium) what is reflected in the HfP British Airways Avios flight redemption pricing chart (https://www.headforpoints.com/2024/08/29/how-many-avios-do-i-need-to-fly-to-2/comment-page-3/#)

    Thanks

You can only book award seats, but these require a cash element to cover BA’s surcharges, as you say. When you do a dummy booking for the cabin you want to upgrade to, you will get a list of options for payment, however when you apply the Barclays voucher, the only one you are given is the top one, i.e. the most avios and least cash. You pay the avios for the lower cabin, and the cash for the one you’re booking into. On a long-haul route, this first option is usually the best value, but of course you have to have enough avios to benefit from it.

Which route/cabin were you thinking of using your voucher on?

    Thanks @Northernlass

Well I’m someway off being able to book anything until I build up some points. But thinking of booking a trip with my OH from Manchester out east (SE Asia, Japan or maybe even Australia) but this will be at least over 12 months away maybe longer. I would like to be able to travel business class.

    @Northernlass

    Just tried a dummy booking, a few things that I wasn’t expecting…

Using rewards flight checker it wont let me look for reward flights from Manchester to destination (Singapore used for trial), it only allows searching from London?

I used BC as the cabin I wanted to book rather than premium economy (I assume this is right even though I will have a voucher to effectively upgrade from PE to BC)?

I looked for off-peak flights over a 12 month period, there wasn’t much availability!

I found some dates eventually and it says I need 220,000 avios and £625 for a return flight

I dont have a voucher yet so not seeing any option about applying a voucher.

How do I work out how many avios will actually be required with the voucher? ATM do I effectively have to do two dummy bookings one for PE to work out avios and one for BC to work out the cash elemnent?

    Thx for your help

This is why it’s always a good idea to read everything on here about how various things work.

For the most popular destinations, you need to book as soon as the seats are released, at T-355. With MAN departures in business class, with the Barclays voucher you have to call BA to add a domestic leg.

    Start with these:

And don’t forget…one voucher is good for two people ,upgraded by one class, one way only ex UK.
To get back home, more Avios or cash.

Alternatively, one person only for a return upgraded journey.

ps And good luck with the Far East or Australia. Flexibility with dates is probably key.
