Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club Kaligo and Virgin Points – any thoughts?

  • 59 posts

    Hi

I’m pondering what to do with some excess virgin points and see you can exchange them for a one night hotel voucher via ‘Kaligo’ at a big selection of hotels…

Has anyone done this and what were your experiences? Wondering on the value for money

Especially eg Booking a Hilton hotel with a voucher and also being a Gold member? Would you book the standard voucher and expect the usual gold status when you arrive..

    Any thoughts would be great.

    Cheers

You don’t get Hilton gold benefits if you book via Kaligo. (unless a hotel is feeling particular generous, it can happen on very very rare occasions)

I’m not a huge collector of Virgin points and accidentally amassed enough to be able to book a room via Kaligo.

Hotel redemptions are sometimes not very good value money-wise but if you’re not going to do anything else with the points and you are comfortable with your choice, then do it.

If you see your chosen hotel on the Kaligo site, don’t wait around to book it. I noticed hotels just disappear or become unavailable when I got around to booking. I’m not sure if hotels only make a few rooms available via Kaligo.

YMMV, but I tend to convert my Virgin points into Hilton Honors directly, in batches of 10,000 at a rate of 2:3. https://www.headforpoints.com/2024/09/16/how-to-convert-virgin-points-to-hilton-or-ihg-hotel-points-virgin-redemption-university-7/
I feel this gives me more flexibility, I can use my Hilton status and – according to Rob’s calculations – this route potentially offers slightly better value than Kaligo: https://www.headforpoints.com/2024/09/28/redeem-virgin-points-for-hotel-rooms-via-kaligo-2/
