@Saltrams – there are no “guarantees” but, in principle, yes, you will receive all the relevant status benefits within the published exceptions and also sometimes subject to the whim of check-in or lounge agents. If you are playing off one higher status for benefits but using another to accrue miles it can be complicated, if e.g. a lounge agent will only allow entry if the relevant status is on your boarding card and you may need to toggle FF numbers in your booking, something airlines are now making harder.

That said, with all the status matches, rematches, paid extensions etc. maybe something will go pop soon!

@Saltrams I think the gist of the comments in this thread suggest that you shouldn’t ever expect ‘guaranteed’ benefits across Skyteam. That being said, I think you hit the nail on the head when you say the hoped for benefit of status matching is that you get access to lounges facilities, excess baggage allowances etc that would not normally come with the cheaper class of fare you booked.

So if one always aims to travel in J then status may not matter so much (although with stingy airlines like BA which still charge separately for seat selection it does add value). In the scenario you describe, nipping around on short economy flights, it definitely has a place in making such travel more comfortable and so enjoyable.

Finally, you mention you have already matched to Skyteam via SAS but that is expiring within six months. I’d suggest you double check that as I did the SAS match (Gold) some time ago (August 24) and while I was expecting that to fall away by 31 March this year it in fact seems to have stuck and is showing in the app as only expiring in September 2026! If true it would appear there’s no need for any of us in this position to spend on this Asante status match 😎

The silver elite status says “ 1 Extra checked baggage on Kenya Airways & Sky Team Partners”. Does this mean an upcoming AF flight will have a free luggage added to it? How do I go about this?

I thought I’d answer my own question. My Silver Jay was matched within 30 minutes.

Air France live chat suggests yes, silver membership should result in free checked baggage. They’ve added it to an existing booking but nothing’s flagged (I also can’t see that they’ve changed the FF number on my booking).

Might give it a few days so the change can percolate across whatever databases, and try again. If it works it’ll be a bargain – £60 for the status match which I would have had to pay for my bag (£30 each way), and very likely I’ll be flying AF in the next 12 months.
