I will traveling to Larnaca very beginning of April. 2 full days, 1 night. Staying at Crowne Plaza in Limassol.
Will be with 19 and 17 year old children.
We will be renting a car from airport
How shall I use my time?
I need the right balance between fun/action(what they want) and a little sightseeing/history.
Any advice what to do for 2 days?
Are watersports open at that time of year?
    Many thanks

I assume you are on the early flight out, but even then it won’t give you much time. Go straight to the hotel, the pool will be too cold. Take a bus or taxi into the centre, walk around the castle, maybe do a boat tour, dinner around the marina/castle.

Next day, drive to Nicosia for some modern history, there are good food places at Mackenzie Beach then it’s a 10 mins drive back to the airport.

(I’ve never been to Kourion – must put it on the list at some point)

The speed limit is now a lot more rigorously enforced on the motorway from Limassol to Larnaca.

I would definitely try to spend some time in Nicosia and walk across the green line into the Turkish part of the city, which we found fascinating. Make sure you have your passports with you.

The 19 and 17 Yr olds might prefer to be dropped off at Nissi Beach, up by Ayia Napa.

Bring some snacks with you to make sure you don’t spend any money in the occupied land

@The Streets. It does help if you know some history

I lived in Episkopi, British Sovereign Base, in 1974 when the Greek National Guard started the war. Every Turkish village in the South was “cleansed” before Turkey stepped in to stop a genocide

OK, that’s a bit better. I was working on the assumption you’d be on BA. It’s a long drag of a flight from the UK. I assume the places around Mackenzie Beach are open for dinner as well – think it was about 6pm when I left last year.

As you are hiring a car, I would definitely drive up the Troodos Mountains, the views are fantastic, plenty of stop off points for photo opportunities. There is an establishment on the way up where you can buy some proper Halloumi cheese, Make sure you take a coat, as in April there will be snow at the top! I would recommend visiting Paralimni, very nice town with plenty of photo opportunities.
Shame your not there at the end of April as Easter is a great celebration, there are giant Easter eggs and bunnies on the roads and roundabouts.

I purchased some very cheap designer towels in Famagusta, I’m guessing they must have been fake, but after several years they are still good, well hidden in the boot (as at that time no purchased goods were supposed to be taken across) of the hired car we were not supposed to take across the border!

I found the Turkish side to have better and cheaper food. At some places it was 10-20% cheaper to pay in lira cash than euro cash.

I’m Cypriot and know exactly the FULL history and would prefer not having someone currently living for free in my house in the North

Thank you for all the great advice.
Is Cyprus busy typically at the beginning of April?
Any more ideas on fun things, watersports etc?

Regarding Limassol, I used to have an apartment in the Neapolis district so know the area well. The Crowne Plaza’s best asset is its small sheltered cove which offers great swimming. There are watersport vendors on the adjacent beach who you can haggle with. It’s a 30min stroll on the promenade to the Old Port / Marina (a bit of history here and good vibe). As for food, the best souvlaki and sheftalia in town is the Charcoal Grill (walking distance). Or if you want takeaway, then it’s Souvlaki No.2 (opposite the Kapatsos takeaway which does some very good traditional Cypriot dishes). Speaking of traditional ‘home cooking’, the best place in town is Diomides Psistaria (restaurant and takeaway). It is very popular with locals at lunchtime. Have fun!

I also would strongly recommend a visit to KKTC / North Cyprus, and not getting involved in arguments about the politics of it.

    Fascinating, cheap, and friendly.

You cannot in most circumstances take a hire car across the border and even where the provider permits it, the insurance implications (if you are in an accident) are daunting. Just don’t use the airport in the North for entry or exit as the South side are very prickly about people entering or leaving “their” territory in an unauthorised way.
