Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Left or right after e-gates at Terminal 5

Question I always have when arriving into T5 and rushing to catch an imminent Heathrow Express train departure. I know its a close call but what is the absolute quickest (shortest) route to get to the Heathrow Express lifts once you exit the e-gates (assuming no checked-in luggage of course)?

I always make a right down to reclaim as I think that comes out closest to the customs exit.

There are customs exits on both sides actually, which then feed the same arrivals hall area from two different sides.

I’d say it’s going to be right, as otherwise you’re taking a few extra steps across that podium level before heading down the escalator into bag reclaim. Also psychologically you’re not walking from (almost) one end of the terminal to the other….

I’ve given up with the T5 arrivals hex lifts and use the escalator, unless one is actually there waiting. With no call button, they seem to hang around the platform level until someone gets in them.

Yes exactly this! Last few times I’ve arrived in T5 recently these lifts are beyond useless, I wonder if it’s somehow timed to pick up to just coincide with Heathrow train departures as you can be standing there for ages before any seem to come.

Your quickest exit is indeed on the right hand side escalators after the egates, then straight and out on the exit on the left hand side. That gets you out fastest.

At the moment there isn’t an escalator down to baggage reclaim if you go the “left” route.

The lifts on the down to the T5 station / up to departures loop are on pre set timings which get messed up when people try and get on when the doors are closing or take their time when leaving because the concept of separate entry and exit doors is too complicated for them.
