Is MBNA horizon still free of any forex fees if used abroad?
I will be using it in Middle East and South Asia.
I also have curve not sure which one should I use.
Was free of fees when used in USA last month.
Totally free for purchases – just used it in Germany an hour ago 🙂
Cashback too, so actually negative FX rates!
Only if it’s an MBNA Horizon card that has no FX fees. They issued more than one variety, my Horizon card has a 2.99% fee.
Still have my fee free one and got no FX fees last week in USA. Such an amazing card.
+1; a product that is very quietly brillaint. I’d suspect a large proportion of cards on issue only get pulled out for use abroad (like mine) so not sure how sustainable it is long-term, especially as closed to applicants, but long may it stay!
I have always understood that the Mastercard exchange rate is always more favourable than the Visa exchange rate.
Is the 0.5% cashback more than enough to make this cheaper than a Halifax Clarity card?
I would suggest using the MBNA card if you’ve got the one with no fees. Curve charges fees at weekends UK times, which (depending on where in the world you are) could include either Friday or Monday. Far too much hassle.
Shhh I think they’ve forgotten about it

Agreed. For a little while I did start using it every day they changed my mind as the cashback started to rack up a bit too quickly. I make sure to use it at least every 6 months though, just to make sure it doesn’t go the other way and become too dormant!

Not always but often. No way to find out in advance.

Thanks. Good to know, even though I do not have a lot of use for the card, as we do not travel much outwith Europe, and I have two EUR/SKR/RON debit cards and a CHF one too.

What were you using it for? And how much were you making?
Are cash withdrawals free on this too? (Aside from any ATM charges)
I think there’s a cash advance fee, and/or you’re charged interest straight away. I’m pretty sure I got caught when Curve started passing through the transaction type codes. Can’t remember the details though I’m afraid.

Yes, I got caught for a cash advance fee and interest last year with the MBNA horizon as the Singapore metro purchase was coded as a cash like transaction!

As above, depends on the version you got – I had two which had zero fees, no forex, no cash advance fees and 0.5% cashback. They eventually get tired of losing money, I found out.
As well as the 0.5% cashback and the Forex-fee-free, I get a lot of value out of the smart rewards. Mostly Waitrose (5%), Morrisons (10% when it’s there) and chain restaurants and pubs (10%) when forced to eat there.
I tend to keep important emails… and then forget I’ve retained them!
I’ve been doing a tidy up and stumbled on the MBNA one from Aug 2018 when the card changed. My version says:
On all purchases you’ll earn 0.5% cash back, with no limit and no annual fee. In addition, there are no cash withdrawal or card purchase fees for using your card at home or abroad.
Might this offering have subsequently changed? Or were people offered different variants at the time?

People were offered different variants at the time – mine was the same as yours, no fees for anything (interest on cash advance transactions of course), 0.5% cashback.
