G’day. think I’m right to understand the Melia Gold breakfast offering is a complimentary breakfast for your partner. For a family of four, with two ankle-biters (9 and 12) what is the best play? Is it to book room only and to presume that the Melia gold offering for breakfast is better value than to book B&B? I’m guessing Mrs Frost would gain a free breakfast, but what of the nippers? Or could they be fee in a city-centre Melia? Mrs Frost is Amex supp so if kids aren’t free, is that the workaround – could the two kids become the freebie guests for each being Melia gold?

Room only rate plus the buy-one-get-one-free gold breakfast tends to be cheaper than the B&B rate, but i’ve stayed in some hotels where this isn’t necessarily the case. If you really wanted to, you could try to find out the price of a breakfast before booking, and then doing the calculations there.

If you’re using the 20% off voucher for gold members, this discount is also applied to the B&B rate as well, so technically the ‘add-on cost’ of the breakfast is reduced by 20% if you book the B&B rate

I have a similar issue as am looking to book 3 rooms for 3 families with each having their own kid.
Even if I book in my name, I guess I’ll receive just one breakfast free.
Might as well get the 24% discount on B&B option and avoid all the hassle.

An update from the Melia hotel I am booking in Paris. They were very helpful.

    In short – book B&B.

Their first suggestion was to book two rooms, each in a gold Melia name – so Mr Frost in one room with a nipper, and Mrs Frost in another with the other. That way, both kids eat free.

But in a family room in this hotel, with it being booked under one name, there will only be one free breakfast. I’m told that kids’ and adults’ breakfast are 25 Euros each (high season) so would be on the hook for 75 Euros each day. That’s a more than the extra one would pay for a B&B rate compared to Room only. Apparently some Melias in Paris will not charge kids for breakfasts up to age 11, so may be a case of DYOR.

I’m completely new to Melia, and can’t find anything of substance on their website about the benefits of gold status. On the Amex Platinum site it says that there is complimentary breakfast for a companion – but does that mean that the gold member has to pay for breakfast?

    yes effectively bogof

Yes exactly that the person that booked must buy atleast one breakfast and then they would get one breakfast free, but only one. It’s not buy two get two free if you bought 4 for example.

For me the best benefits are the 20% discounts plus the birthday upgrade.

Thanks all, doesn’t sound overly helpful for a sole traveller then.

Can the 20% discounts be used in conjunction with Virtuoso benefits?

    Does that stack?

It did for me. It’s been a few years but I seem to recall the upgrade can only be used during online check in.

I will try next week my first Melia hotel after reaching gold status. Can I buy my breakfast at the hotel, in order to receive the complimentary breakfast for the companion, or do I need to contact the hotel in advance to buy the breakfast for one through the hotel booking?

We are also planning to travel to Gran Melia Rome next month. I have already booked hotel before I got the Amex Plat. Is there a way I can ask hotel to apply the 20% voucher to existing booking OR the only option is to cancel and rebook? Also, did you book Gran Melia Rome through FHR OR was it a direct booking?

We stayed at GM Rome in Feb.

20% applied via app and I asked the hotel to apply the birthday upgrade which they duly did (albeit to an attic room) from a regular family suite.

Breakfast was acceptable but nothing special tbh. Anything off-buffet was chargeable and the buffet didn’t really have all that much variety. We did however think the service was OTT.. I’d literally put down a knife and fork and they’d collect to replace (as if we were under surveillance) and I think they over did it in terms of service to the extent it was intimidating.

The hotel concierge was very helpful and our room had one set of complimentary attraction tickets included for which we went for the pantheon during our stay as we’d purchased other attraction tix ahead of the trip.

Btw they did add a €80 “discretionary surcharge” at check-out to the bill which they explained was to be divided up by all staff. I don’t recall if this was a % (of our €2k bill) or a set amount per day (5 days, 4 nights), but we asked for it to be removed and they duly obliged. Apparently they’re the first hotel in their chain to start adding this on (so they said) and no issues taking it off.

We also did the 6-course taster menu one night at their Folie restaurant which wasn’t bad, but I’ve had far better for the price. It is also the same location as the brekky restaurant which kind of spoiled it a bit.

    @ukpolak
This is super helpful, Thank you.
We are contemplating between Melia and Anantara. Melia mainly because of 20% voucher which reduces cost significantly. It’s surprising to hear that breakfast was not that great. Did you go for breakfast included rate OR had breakfast BOGOF with gold?

@pbehal our rate was booked via official app (I think on black Fri) with breakfast included and it didn’t come below that price for a few months before, or above that price from November to our stay in Feb.

Recognise the review is a bit meh but they did provide bottles of Prosecco, snacks etc every other day or so, and the team were super helpful. A Champions League team were also staying in the hotel for a match vs Roma and so lots of police around too!

We took Ubers to the main sites, and it was a 15 min walk across the river to the hop on hop off stop (book two days for better value than one).

The other thing to note is that it’s not really in close walking distance from restaurants. I mean 15 min + then sure, but it’s pretty much a 15min walk to anywhere. In inclement (rainy or hot) weather I’d bear that in mind. Otherwise it was fab and service great.

We are staying there next month for a few nights for a family trip… The pool sold it to me really, so hoping for a bit of decent weather to make use of it. We werent planning on eating in the hotel except for breakfast. Thanks for your feedback

Just wanted to flag that Melia are running some sale Wonder Week.

For 4 days in Paris La Def next year, there’s no difference from yesterday to today, but I checked for a Sol booking we have in May and indeed it is now cheaper than of late (albeit not as cheap as Black Friday)

Worth re-checking bookings in case your bookings are now cheaper in the sale.

Thanks for the heads up! Gran Melia Rome is not on the list of hotels in this offer!

Thanks! Anyone know what happens to the 20% off voucher if you cancel and rebook? My reading is you lose it? Don’t seem to be able to amend booking to grab a lower price?

Have never lost the voucher if cancelling / re-booking but then my OH has a supplementary Amex Plat with her own set of 20% codes in the event you’re unable to rebook.

Ie get supplementary holder to book identical booking and at cheaper price, before you then cancel your one. The issue is if you are collecting or spending points (on your account rather than other) but am yet to read of anyone with Melia rewards actually collecting the points as 20% in of itself is a good perk.
