Going to Roatán this August at the start of a Central America trip and we have reward flights to MIA. AA have just changed our flights out of MIA making the onward flight impossible the same day so we need an overnight in MIA.
Suggestions for somewhere to stay given we land 1820 Friday evening and flight to RTB is next day at 1215. Looking for something close-ish to the airport in the sense of transfer time where we can get some great food and some drinks.
It’s not really that far from the airport to most places in Miami to be honest. I recently joined my wife on a work trip and stayed in Coral Gables. We stayed in the Hyatt Regency which was nice enough, there’s a few other places to choose from too, depending on budget. Quite a few restaurants and places to go for drinks etc along the Miracle mile area. Otherwise you can head close to the seafront (maybe Brickell? area). I’m not sure i would bother going to SouthBeach for 1 night at that kind of time as traffic can be quite bad getting over there and back at rush hour.
With such a short stopover by the time you’ve got through immigration (though it’s now very quick at MIA if the electronic scanners are operating), and back to the airport pretty much after breakfast, I would stay at one of the many airport hotels. You’ve got Hiltons, IHG, Marriotts plus others. Make sure you pick one with a functioning free airport shuttle as some have permanently removed these on the pretext of Covid and now make you pay for a taxi.

Don’t think these exist anymore. Certainly weren’t there at Christmas. They have Global Entry kiosks tho or a nice 3 hr queue 👍🏻😒
We flew with BA and there was no electronic scanners. It was very quick getting through though (not so quick waiting for bags however). I don’t think it will be much more time (if at all) getting an uber to a hotel further away than it is waiting for a aiport hotel shuttle. cost will be about $10-15 from experieince. If you land at 18.20 you could be at a hotel for 8pm and time for a walk to find some dinner and drinks.
Lol, I think I’m just tight! And lazy as no need to tell the shuttle driver where to go. In 2018 we flew GCM – MIA and everyone was going through the scanners so maybe it’s just certain routes. The customs officer spent a bit of time marvelling at the fact that we were English and asking if we’d ever had jellied eels (never even seen any!) We did get the 2 1/2 hour queue on our LHR-IAD leg at the start of the trip.

I used to make a lot of brief business trips to Miami and always preferred to stay in Coconut Grove – may be worth checking hotels there.
Otherwise, last time I had a one-night stay (cruse ship related) I chose the EB Hotel in Miami- just a few mins from MIA. Pleasant enough – and very convenient.

I cycled down to coconut grove and it’s very nice around that area. I’m not sure about hotels, but some nice bars and restaurants. It seems a little quieter, although I only visited during daytime.

Looks nice and there’s some decent hotels though traffic looks hairy. Google says 15-40 minutes drive!

I’m Global Entry but the missus isn’t (yet). She could do interview on arrival but my experience of that is you just go through the slow immigration queue and then find somebody in a uniform to hunt down an immigration officer to process your application.

That’s what I’m hoping for. I can see the airport is not overly far from Little Havana which I guess would be worth it for Friday night drinks and food. Plenty of time in the morning and an active first evening always does wonders for my jet lag.

You are correct. They did used to have them there (I have used them there too), but they have been removed. Here is a list of airports that currently have them 🙂 https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/apc
