Forums Payment cards American Express Misread Amex Gold 38k Offer – Not Eligible Due to BA Premium Card

  • 32 posts

I misunderstood the new Amex Gold card offer. I thought I’d receive 38,000 Membership Rewards points for spending £3,000 in the first three months. I previously held a Gold card over 24 months ago, and I currently have a British Airways Premium Plus Amex.

However, I’ve now realised that I’m not eligible for the welcome bonus because Amex considers any personal card that earns Membership Rewards points — not just the Gold or Platinum — when determining bonus eligibility. I believed the 24-month wait only applied to the same type of card, so I’ve essentially been waiting two years for nothing. It’s frustrating because I was drawn in by a targeted offer of 38,000 points rather than the standard 30,000, but I wasn’t actually eligible for either due to holding another Amex.

I accept that it’s my mistake for not reading all the fine print carefully, but I’m still annoyed. I’m also now under the impression that I’ll have to wait another 24 months after closing my BA Premium Amex before I can qualify for a Platinum welcome bonus — which adds to my frustration.

Has this always been the rule, or is this a recent change?

That’s not what stopped you getting the card. It was the fact that you currently hold the BA Premium Plus. Rob’s article here is really clear on what you can apply for based on what cards you currently have:

If you currently have the free British Airways or British Airways Premium Plus Amex credit card:
You would need to cancel and wait 24 months before you can get a bonus on Amex Cashback, Amex Cashback Everyday, British Airways, British Airways Premium Plus, Preferred Rewards Gold, Marriott Bonvoy, Nectar, American Express Rewards”

@skywalker Thanks! annoying on my part that i hadn’t seen this before. Still can’t be good practice that they target me with cookie related advertising whilst im logged in on an offer i’m not eligible for. lesson learnt anyway. i will try and complain but im sure i will get nowhere with it.
