I am hoping to fly VA to Shanghai then Singapore Airlines to and from Sydney returning to the UK via Shanghai. As Virgin and Singapore Airlines are now “partners” will each airline be obliged to rebook me on the next available flight in the same class without a cost to me if an incoming flight is delayed?
Only if booked on a single itinerary for the entire journey. If you’re starting a new itinerary at Shanghai then absolutely no duty owed to you. You’d be looking to your travel insurer if anything went wrong.
