Morning everyone,
We have a BA flight from London to Calvi (Corsica) connecting through Marseille booked for Sunday. When I booked it a couple of months ago I was more risk-taking, but today 1h to change in Marseille seems Mission Impossible especially during peak season. Marseille is a small airport but I think there is a non zero chance my first leg will be delayed.
The second leg is the last flight of the day to Calvi, and I want to understand what my options would be if we were to miss our connection? I am pre-emptively asking a couple of days in advance as I don’t want to take the wrong decision on Sunday whilst travelling just because I don’t know my rights.
I booked my flights with my personal Platinum card. Should we miss our connection in Marseille, would we be better off asking BA to find us a hotel near the airport or can we book our own hotel in Marseille and have the Platinum insurance reimburse it? If so, what is the limit for the Platinum expense, per person? Similarly, are taxis to the hotel covered by The Amex insurance or by BA?
Hopefully it won’t happen obviously, but given this will be our first vacation day I want to minimise any stress should we miss our connection.
Thank you all!
If it’s on ticket all the way to Calvi, BA are on the hook for duty of care costs. So, hotel, food (but not booze), transport to/from the hotel, and some communications costs.
Amex will expect you to seek to recover any costs from the transport provider first. In this case that’s BA. So you can’t claim with Amex for this. (The insurance is very helpful when flying in countries without legislation like EU-261, when taking trains etc)
When you land in Marseilles, head straight to transfer. You might get lucky, possible the onward plane will be late too, or they might even hold it a few minutes! If not, check your email. Very small chance that BA will have booked you something, but feels unlikely at an out station. If not, book yourself into something reasonable, and keep all the receipts. You can claim on the BA website

@Constantin75 – firstly, this depends on whether you are travelling on one through booking to Calvi. If you are, and you miss the connection, then BA will be responsible for rebooking you and covering the cost of accommodation and food as necessary until the rebooked flight. You might also be entitled to delay compensation. If this is the case you must claim all that from BA first – Amex requires you to do this before entertaining a claim and note that the sums covered by Amex under the travel inconvenience section are paltry.
If BA either offers accommodation you don’t fancy or tells you to book your own, you claim that cost from them; just keep all the costs objectively reasonable.
If you are on two bookings/tickets you won’t be able to check bags through and BA will have no responsibility. You would need to sort out rebooking and accommodation then claim from Amex who might well reject the claim on the basis of insufficient time between flights.
Thank you both!
Yes both legs are booked on the same journey with BA, so bags should be checked through.
Fingers crossed I make the connection but I am more relaxed now, knowing I can book accommodation and food if we miss our flight, and then claim it back.
