I’m currently Diamond, but lacking points a bit this year. Currently 41,800 YTD so a bit off the target of 120K. However have got 13 nights currently booked before the end of the year, with at least 2 more at IC Park Lane to book. I have tried the Diamond offer but wasn’t eligible. However I have received two fairly recent offers: 3x Bonus Points at Voco (covers 6 of nights I have booked) and 3000 points every 2 nights on all stays. I presume these won’t help with Diamond status though as they are bonuses?
@JG Correct, those bonuses won’t count for status.
@JG, glad to see I’m not the only one getting useless offers.
You need 78k points to retain diamond, if your 15 nights are USD 150 average (before tax) that’s 22k. If 11 of those nights qualify for 5000 bonus point rates that would give you another 55k
I will be renewing my diamond with only 25 paid nights at an average of USD 150 and 15x 5000 bonus points (and you also get the points to use, it’s not just for status)
The cost is the difference between prepaid and flexible, but this year I’ve basically changed every hotel stay at least once
I haven’t stayed in an IHG property for two years but I’m being bombarded with what seem very generous offers maybe suddenly triggered by a stay booked in November. They also told me yesterday that if I stayed 70 more nights (of the remaining 97 this year) by 31 Dec I would reach some elevated status.
The lure of reaching some sort of status was somewhat devalued by earlier contact from the hotel (not initiated by me) telling me that I could have lounge access included on my booking for the special offer price of €35 (usually €50) per person per day, so €350 for our stay. They’re having a laugh. I told them that I wasn’t very interested but was rather concerned that such access wouldn’t be included anyway when booking a suite, so I might downgrade or change hotels. As a special one off gesture it is now being included at no additional cost.
Top-notch negotiating tactics there @JDB !

I have never quite worked out which bonus points go towards retaining your status?
@JG As I understand it the only ones that are qualifying these days are the ones where you’re offered a choice of a paid bonus during the penultimate stage of the online booking pages, typically 5000 for $xx.

Ah, ok, I was imagining that where you were basically paying for points that those wouldn’t be allowed!
@JG I know right, IHG are so inconsistent in that respect. Free points don’t qualify if they’re not paid earnings but paid bonuses do. Unless they’re paid and credited back as part of joining AMB status in which case they don’t. The mind boggles.
It was so much easier when all the extra points from various sources qualified but they have chipped away at it over the years until there’s almost noting left apart from straight $ earnings.
Well on Wed Wednesday morning I checked out of an 3 night mattress run and the nights from that stay posted earlier this morning and that meant I had achieved the 10 required nights.
The app is now showing me as qualified for Diamond for 2025.

Which annoys some of us who artificially managed to secure top tier status in the past but haven’t (yet) been given a decent offer to renew it in 2025. Hey ho. And well done… 👏
