Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Multi city reward flight/3 legs one ticket – can I do this?

  • 1 post

Hi all, I posted this on Flyertalk but got differing opinions so thought I’d try here. I’m trying to find out if it’s possible to do 3 legs on a reward flight, with a Cv.
    It’s Edi-LHR-MAd- Lima.
The first leg is BA then the next 2 are Iberia. I’m not yet at -355 so tried a dummy booking and it doesn’t let me do this. If I can’t do this all on one ticket, I’ll need a backup plan maybe via Brazil.
(I know there’s Iberia Express from EDI but the flight days don’t tie in with what I need).
At worst, I could fly separately from EDI -LHR then reward flight the two legs via MAD but much more preferable if I can get all 3 on the one ticket.
I’m not sure if the EDI-LHR would still count as a domestic transfer to long haul given that the next leg is only to MAD.
Anyone done a similar 3 leg reward flight?
I know I can phone BA but we all know how long that can take and agents may give differing opinions as to whether it’s possible so I’d like to know before I phone to book.
Thank you in advance for any advice.

I don’t think BA will allow this for the reasons you have identified and by booking it in this manner, while you would have protected connections but still have the higher Avios cost of booking from Edinburgh or London plus the APD so it doesn’t net out that well. The relevant clause from the BA terms is 15.9.

15.9. There are no charges for stopovers included in a reward itinerary where the stopover is connecting from a domestic flight on to a long-haul destination. For reward itineraries where the stopover is connecting from a domestic flight on to a short-haul destination, charges will be applicable.

On the assumption that you would be planning to return from Lima (or another SAm gateway) to the UK, if you were to start your outbound ticket in Madrid to get round the problems above, BA has recently been pushing back on allowing journeys MAD > SAm > MAD > UK which people have commonly booked hitherto so as to save Avios and APD outbound but have a protected connection and luggage tagged back to the UK for the return.

I replied to your post over on FT. I know calling BA is a pain but it is possible to book 3 legs on one reward ticket xxx-LHR-MAD-SAm but you have to call BA to book – you cannot do it online. Also as I said over on FT you are trying to use a companion voucher across BA and IB and your issue is that IB does not do RFS fares – that is another reason why you are struggling to book starting in EDI.

The free domestic sector is only allowed when connecting to a longhaul flight (eg EDI-LHR-SCL) so you cannot book EDI-LHR-MAD and only pay for LHR-MAD – you will be charged for two sectors. If you add MAD-SAm that will still require you to pay for each sector.

I still think you are better off having one ticket from origin to destination as that will allow baggage to be booked through to destination. Also any changes to the SAm itinerary will protect all flights in the itinerary, if you do separate tickets from the UK to MAD then a change between SAm and MAD will not allow you to change flights for free between the UK and Spain. Plus you should be able to save some Avios on the EDI-LHR-MAD sectors (in both directions) which may offset some of the extra APD spend

If you are determined to book online and do separate bookings you should definitely build in a night in MAD in both directions as that will allow you to collect luggage at MAD and should protect you if there is a snafu with getting to/from MAD to connect to/from the MAD-LIM flights.

I think I’d also be inclined to look at EDI-LHR-SCL as that is bookable online (subject to availability) but that means you would need to book a separate flight from SCL-LIM.
